Brentford will celebrate their return to the top flight for the first time in more than 70 years by hosting Arsenal on the opening day of the 2021-22 Premier League season.
The Bees, who beat Swansea in the Championship play-off final, will open their season with consecutive London derbies, heading to Crystal Palace after the visit of the Gunners before taking on Aston Villa at Villa Park.
Palace also find themselves with a London-heavy start to the season as they are due at Stamford Bridge on the opening weekend before hosting Brentford and then taking on West Ham, all before the end of August.
Perhaps the pick of the opening weekend’s fixtures though will come at Old Trafford, where Leeds United will renew their rivalry with Manchester United, potentially in front of a full stadium of fans.
Key dates
(Subject to change due to broadcast selections; TV fixtures for August will be announced by Monday 21 June)
Having won the title by 12 points in 2020-21, comfortably beating Man Utd and Liverpool, Manchester City have been installed as odds-on favourites to retain the Premier League title.
They will start their season with a potentially tricky trip to Spurs, but the first test of their title credentials is expected on Saturday 2 October, when they travel to Anfield to take on Liverpool.
A month later, they will face 2021 runners-up Man Utd in what should be the first full capacity Manchester derby since before the pandemic on Saturday 6 November at Old Trafford, with the favour repaid at the Etihad on Saturday 5 March.
The first north London derby, a key date the diaries of Arsenal and Tottenham fans, will fall on Saturday 25 September at the Emirates (return fixture, Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Saturday 15 January), taking place on the same weekend as Man City’s trip to Chelsea, which according to the bookies will be the first showdown between the two favourites for the title.
At the bottom end of the table, the final day is always one to look out for, where relegation is often decided: Sunday 22 May will be the date with destiny for many sides. It looks a tough draw for all three promoted sides on that day with Watford taking on European champions Chelsea away from home, Norwich hosting Spurs and Brentford at home to Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds.
