What World Cup games are on TV today? UK kick-off times, TV channels and when Brazil and Japan are playing

The 2022 World Cup round-of-16 continues today, and two more teams will book their tickets to the quarter-finals.

England secured their spot in the last eight on Sunday evening with an impressive 3-0 win over Senegal. Goals from Jordan Henderson, Harry Kane and Bukayo Saka mean Gareth Southgate’s side will face France on Saturday.

The French had an impressive win of their own, cruising past Poland 3-1 thanks to an Olivier Giroud strike, which saw him become the country’s record goalscorer, and a brace from Kylian Mbappe.

The 2022 World Cup is being broadcast on free-to-air television in the UK, with the BBC and ITV sharing the rights – here’s how to watch all the action live today.

What are the World Cup games on TV today?

The first game of the day is Japan vs Croatia, kicking off at 3pm from Al Janoub Stadium in Al Wakrah. It is being shown live on BBC One, with coverage starting at 2.30pm.

Then, this evening’s Brazil vs South Korea kicks off at 7pm from Stadium 974 in Doha. Coverage starts at 6.15pm on ITV1.

Can I watch on BBC iPlayer or ITVX?

As per the TV licensing website, you need to pay for a TV licence to watch BBC iPlayer, and this applies for “live, catch up or on demand”, with “any device and provider you use”.

It adds: “Don’t forget, you still need a TV licence to watch live on any channel, TV service or streaming service.” This means that you also need one to watch live World Cup action on the ITVX (formerly ITV Hub) service.

However, you do not need a TV licence to watch non-BBC programmes on online catch-up services, so you will still be allowed to watch ITV’s World Cup highlights (but not BBC) after they are broadcast.

A television licence costs £159 a year for both homes and businesses, and covers any TV sets, laptops, tablets, phones and other devices that can receive a TV signal in a single property.

You can check if you need to purchase one on the TV licensing website here, and can buy your licence via the link here.

What should we expect from the World Cup today?

Japan defender Yuto Nagatomo has told his teammates they’ll need to show “samurai spirit” in Monday’s round-of-16 match against Croatia.

And they’ll need another quality that Nagatomo learned playing for almost a decade in Italy, mostly with Inter Milan.

“Coraggio,” Nagatomo said. “We need to play with courage.”

Japan are appearing in the knockout stage for the fourth time, and still searching for their first win. They beat both Germany and Spain – two former world champions – 2-1 in the groups, but also stumbled to a 1-0 loss against Costa Rica.

Croatia, the smallest country in the final 16 with a population of only four million, were runners-up four years ago against France, and finished third in 1998.

Could the third time be the charm? “Why not,” said Croatia coach, Zlatko Dalic.

“They will apply the samurai philosophy in their game,” he said. “We will also do our part. We know how important this match is for us. We know who the opponent is. We know their mentality. If we want to go further we must apply that same standard, that same attitude.”

Croatia advanced with 0-0 draws against Belgium and Morocco, which came either side of a 4-1 victory over Canada.

Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric, the world player of the year in 2018, remains the heartbeat of a team whose experienced midfield is typically a match for any opponent but which still lacks a prolific scorer up front.

In the later game, Neymar is expected to start for Brazil after missing the last two group games with an ankle injury he picked up in the opening win over Serbia.

I prefer to use my best player from the start,” Brazil coach, Tite, said. “It’s the coach who has to make that decision and take on that responsibility.”

South Korea are trying to advance past the round of 16 for the first time since their historic run as co-hosts in 2002, when they reached the semi-finals and finished fourth. South Korea were eliminated at the group stage in 2014 and 2018.

They advanced by beating Portugal 2-1 with a dramatic stoppage-time goal by Hwang Hee-chan, who was a second-half substitute. He’s expected to be in the starting line-up against Brazil after missing the team’s first two games because of a hamstring injury.

“In the first match it was impossible for me to play and the pain got worse. I did a little running, but I thought I could play the second match, but they held me out,” Hwang said, adding that playing against Portugal “was a little bit of a risk. But I didn’t care what happened to me personally. I just wanted to contribute”.

This will be the first official meeting between Brazil and South Korea, with the South Americans winning six of seven friendlies.

“We can’t think it’s going to be an easy game like it was in that friendly,” Brazil captain, Thiago Silva, said. “Now it’s the World Cup and they’ve advanced in a very tough group. We have a lot of respect for them.”
