Why are there no World Cup matches today? When England are playing next and quarter-final fixtures in full

The 2022 World Cup has been rattling along at a rate of knots, with the winter tournament crammed in to fit with the European domestic season.

Under the condensed format, there were four group stage fixtures a day, before rolling straight into the round of 16, which was played over four days.

Now, though, Qatar 2022 is taking a quick breather before continuing with the business end of the tournament – here’s everything you need to know, and when England are next in action.

Why are there no World Cup matches today?

Portugal’s 6-1 demolition of Switzerland on Tuesday evening was the final last-16 fixture, and there is a break of two days before the quarter-finals get underway.

This means that there are no World Cup fixtures on either Wednesday 7 and Thursday 8 December.

The quarter-finals are being played over two days, with two fixtures on each day, starting at 3pm on Friday 9 December with Croatia vs Brazil.

With the final falling exactly four weeks after the tournament started on Sunday 20 November, Qatar 2022 is the shortest tournament since the World Cup switched to its current, 32-team format in 1998.

When are England playing next?

England will play France in the quarter-finals on Saturday 10 December, with kick off at 7pm (UK time, Qatar being three hours ahead).

The game will be played at Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor – the same ground where England beat Senegal in the round of 16, but also drew 0-0 with the US in the group stages.

Live coverage will be on BBC One, with the build-up starting at 6.15pm – Gary Lineker will present all the action.

The entire 2022 World Cup is being broadcast on free-to-air television in the UK, with the BBC and ITV sharing the rights.

All matches are therefore also available to live stream for free on BBC iPlayer or the new ITVX streaming platform, depending on which broadcaster is airing that fixture.

What are the other World Cup quarter-final fixtures?

The full list of quarter-final fixtures is as follows:

Friday 9 December

  • Croatia v Brazil, Education City Stadium, Al Rayyan (3pm – BBC One)
  • Netherlands v Argentina, Lusail Iconic Stadium, Lusail (7pm – BBC One)

Saturday 10 December

  • Morocco vs Portugal, Al Thumama Stadium, Doha (3pm – ITV)
  • England v France, Al Bayt Stadium, Al Khor (7pm – ITV)

Who will England play if they beat France?

If England are victorious on Saturday, then they will then face the winners of the day’s other quarter-final – so Morocco or Portugal – in the semis.

The sides will battle it out for a spot in the final on Wednesday 14 December at Al Bayt Stadium, Al Khor, at 7pm, with the clash broadcast live on BBC One from 6.30pm.

Victory there will, of course, mean the Three Lions earn a spot in just their second World Cup final, which is taking place at the Lusail Iconic Stadium on Sunday 18 December, with kick-off at 3pm.

After sharing broadcasting rights throughout the tournament, the Qatar 2022 final will be aired live on both BBC One and ITV.

England could face any of the four quarter-finalists in the other half of the draw in the final – one of Croatia, Brazil, the Netherlands or Argentina.
