What World Cup games are on TV today? UK kick-off times, channel guide and when Spain and Portugal are playing

The first knockout round of the 2022 World Cup concludes today, with two more last-16 fixtures for viewers to enjoy.

There was drama in both of Monday’s clashes at Qatar 2022, with Croatia edging out Japan on penalties before Brazil scored four in the first half as they blew South Korea away.

After today, there’s a two-day break before the quarter-finals, and England’s much-anticipated clash with France – so you won’t want to miss any of the action.

What World Cup games are on TV today?

The first World Cup action on Tuesday comes from the Education City Stadium in Al Rayyan with Morocco vs Spain, which kicks off at 3pm (UK time – Qatar is three hours ahead).

It is being shown live on ITV, with the build-up coverage starting at 2pm.

The broadcaster is also airing today’s second World Cup last-16 fixture, Portugal vs Switzerland at the Lusail Stadium. Build-up for that clash starts at 6.15pm, ahead of a 7pm kick-off.

Can I watch live on ITVX?

As per the TV licensing website, you need to pay for a TV licence in order to watch BBC iPlayer, and this applies for “live, catch up or on demand”, with “any device and provider you use”.

It adds: “Don’t forget, you still need a TV licence to watch live on any channel, TV service or streaming service.” This means that you also need one to watch live World Cup action on the ITVX (formerly ITV Hub) service.

However, you do not need a TV licence to watch non-BBC programmes on online catch-up services, so you will still be allowed to watch ITV’s World Cup highlights (but not BBC) after they are broadcast.

A TV licence costs £159 a year for both homes and businesses, and covers any TV sets, laptops, tablets, phones and other devices that can receive a TV signal in a single property.

You can check if you need to purchase one on the TV licensing website here, and can buy your licence via the link here.

What can you expect from today’s World Cup games?

Morocco go into their clash with Spain as clear underdogs. However, they shocked Belgium with a 2-0 group stage victory to book a last-16 place, and have promised to “come out swinging” today.

That result came after they had already held 2018 finalists Croatia to a goalless draw, and Walid Regragui’s side are likely to enjoy the majority of the support at the Education City Stadium after winning Group F.

Their manager believes the Atlas Lions are now playing for the whole of the African continent and the Arab world: “We will come in with a winner’s attitude, we will come out swinging.

“We want to hoist our Moroccan flag way up high, first and foremost for us and our country and yes, for all Arabs and Africans – we want to make them happy. We want their prayers and we want their support.

“Spain have a lot of experience, we haven’t been here for 36 years. It’s important for us to put our emotions aside and pull out all the stops. The great nations are here and it’s important for us to give them a run for their money.”

After starting the tournament with a 7-0 win over Costa Rica, Spain faltered, and limped through the group stages in second place after a 2-1 loss to Japan in their final fixture.

However, manager Luis Enrique rejected the notion that that defeat illustrated that his side were too rigid and unwilling to play in a more direct way when necessary.

He said: “I think there is clear misinformation in the world of football. What’s clear is that everyone uses their own weapons.

“You tell us, when should we go for the long ball? When we know we’re going to lose? No, that doesn’t work in football.

“We do not rule out any action. If we have a situation and we go for a long ball, that’s totally fine. That is something that needs to be interpreted by the footballer on the pitch.”

He added that it was a “cliche” to suggest it was a lack of experience that had cost his team victory against Germany (with whom they drew 1-1) and led to the upset against Japan.

Yet again, all eyes will be on Cristiano Ronaldo when Portugal face Switzerland.

Following his dramatic departure from Manchester United at the start of the tournament, the 37-year-old has been linked with a big-money move to Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr.

But the leading international goalscorer of all time raised eyebrows with his reaction after being substituted in his country’s 2-1 defeat to South Korea on Friday.

He later said that his frustration was aimed at an opposing player, rather than his manager Fernando Santos for taking him off.

Either way, the Portugal coach said it was not a good look for the team and he has not confirmed if Ronaldo will captain the side in Tuesday’s last-16 clash.

He said: “If I see the images – I didn’t like it, not at all. I really did not like it. But from that moment onwards, everything is finished – full stop regarding that issue.”

Santos added: “I only decide who’s going to be the captain when I’ve reached the stadium, so I don’t know. I don’t know what the line-up will be. That’s what I’ve always done and that’s what I’m always going to do.”

Switzerland enter the tie as underdogs, but coach Murat Sakin was quietly optimistic ahead of the clash: “We’re very much looking forward to this game. It’s a big opportunity for us to make history for Switzerland.

“We’ve seen how euphoric the people are about the fact that we are at this stage and, of course, we’d love to give our fans one more game. We’re very ready for the game.”
