England v Croatia: the best and most heartbreaking tweets from World Cup semi-final

It all started with such hope, after Kieran Tripper put England 1-0 up against Croatia in the World Cup semi-final.

Barely five minutes into the game and Luka Modric brought down Dele Alli on the edge of the penalty area and England took an early lead.

It seemed like it was meant to be. After all, the psychic pig said so.

But the Three Lions struggled to dominate for much of the game, with Croatia in possession most of the time. They scored an hour in, and finally netted the winning second goal in extra time.

England fans went from the highs of an early lead to the crushing reality that it’s not coming home for another four years.

Hyde Park erupted in elation, and beer, after England’s goal.

As did Castlefield, in Manchester, and many towns and cities across England.

It started feel like an eternity. Could football really be coming home?

Then Croatia had the upper hand, full of energy, and Twitter began to turn.

Until, eventually, hope was given up.

But pride was not.
