More than 220,000 people sign petition calling for a bank holiday if England win the World Cup

More than 220,000 people have signed a petition calling for a bank holiday if England win the World Cup.

The squad play Croatia in the semi-final in Russia on Wednesday night and if they win, the team will go on to face France in the final on Sunday.

The petition calls for the public to get Monday 16 July off work to rest sore heads and give hoarse voices a chance to recover. “We need this for all those supporting England as the next day will not be pleasant for all fans,” it reads.

Parliament will now consider the petition for debate but should England crash out of the tournament on Wednesday, it’s safe to say it will probably be taken off the agenda.

‘Very special international competition’

The petition comes after Jeremy Corbyn called for the UK to be given a bank holiday if England win, with Labour launching its own petition.

It reads: “Let’s give everyone the chance to celebrate as a nation. If it’s coming home – so should our workers!”

Last week, a spokesperson for the Labour leader said the World Cup was a “very special international competition”.

“It’s something that brings people together on a very large scale and we need recognition of that and recognition of the importance of football in the country,” Sky News reported.

“We don’t want to get ahead of ourselves, but I think it is the case that Jeremy believes that if England were to win the World Cup there should be a public bank holiday in celebration,” they added.

Mr Corbyn has previously said the next Labour government would give the public four more bank holidays to mark the patron saints of England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland.

Shadow First Secretary of State Emily Thornberry said at the beginning of the World Cup there should be a bank holiday if one of the UK’s football teams reaches the final.
