Summer signings Jorginho and Riyad Mahrez start for Chelsea and Manchester City respectively in the Community Shield this afternoon.
Jorginho, who turned down City in order to link up with his former Napoli boss Maurizio Sarri once more at Stamford Bridge, starts in a three-man central midfield with Cesc Fabregas and Ross Barkley.
Chelsea stormed the 2016-17 Premier League season by using a 3-4-3 system under Antonio Conte but Sarri’s first teamsheet suggests a switch to a 4-3-3 is on the cards.
Pep Guardiola looks to have gone with a 4-2-3-1 system this afternoon and Mahrez will be deployed in one the three advanced midfield positions alongside Bernardo Silva and Leroy Sane.
There were concerns that Mahrez would miss the start of the season after he hobbled off with an ankle injury during City’s 3-2 win over Bayern Munich last month, but the £60m signing from Leicester has recovered in time.
On the whole, both line-ups are packed full of established stars with both Sarri and Guardiola treating this as the final preparation before the Premier League starts up again next week.
There are a couple of exciting youngsters on show too, though, with Callum Hudson-Odoi rewarded for his promising form in pre-season with a starting place in Chelsea’s attack.
Phil Foden, meanwhile, is given the nod in central midfield by Guardiola with both Kevin De Bruyne and David Silva absent.
There is no place in the Chelsea 18 for either Thibaut Courtois or Eden Hazard, both of whom have been linked with moves to Real Madrid.
