At long last we have a Fantasy Premier League gameweek to really get excited about.
In recent weeks FPL managers have been fed double gameweek morsels – a postponed fixture added here, another there – but this time there is a meaty, blockbuster edition to get stuck into with all 20 teams in action and eight of them scheduled to play twice.
The clubs that will play twice in Double Gameweek 26 are: Arsenal, Burnley, Crystal Palace, Leeds, Liverpool, Tottenham, Watford and Wolves. There is twice the fun for Burnley too, as they will also feature twice in Gameweek 27 as they catch up on various fixtures that fell foul to Covid (and the snow) during the winter.
Ahead of the biggest double gameweek of the campaign, managers around the world will be boosting their benches, booking in their transfers and slapping on the triple captain armband. Those who have already used their triple captain chip may have to watch Liverpool’s games against Norwich and Leeds from behind the sofa as Mo Salah is bound to have plenty of backers. The Egyptian has obliterated plenty of FPL records this season and could conceivably become the most triple captained player in a gameweek ever.
This week’s transfer deadline is 11am on Saturday.
Here is this week’s team which comes in half a million under the £83m budget.
Aaron Ramsdale (Arsenal)
Aaron Ramsdale is the most-bought goalkeeper of the gameweek so far and with good reason. Only Liverpool and Manchester City (both six) have conceded fewer home goals than Arsenal (eight) this season, while six of their 11 clean sheets have come at the Emirates. Burnley’s Nick Pope (£5.4m) is an excellent alternative, however, given the Clarets are the only side to play two fixtures in Gameweek 26 and 27.
Price: £5.1m Points: 101 Gameweek 26 fixture(s): Brentford (h), Wolves (h)
Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool)
Trent Alexander-Arnold is a must-have at all times but particularly so in a double gameweek – and a favourable one at that. The Liverpool right-back has registered more Premier League assists (10) than any other player in the league and is second to only Bruno Fernandes for chances created. Salah is the standout captain pick this week, but for those managers inclined to take a risk, Alexander-Arnold could be a great alternative given his exploits this season.
Price: £8.5m Points: 156 Gameweek 26 fixture(s): Norwich (h), Leeds (h)
Kieran Tierney (Arsenal)
Doubling up on the Arsenal defence certainly looks a viable strategy for the reasons outlined above: Mikel Arteta’s side aren’t exactly the Invincibles going forward but they are far less brittle than some of the more recent Arsenal teams. Perhaps it is because they can call upon players like Kieran Tierney, aka the man who wears t-shirts when it’s snowing, these days. The Glaswegian is Arsenal’s most creative defender with three assists to his name so far, but if funds are tight move for the cheaper Ben White (£4.5m) instead.
Price: £5.1m Points: 88 Gameweek 26 fixture(s): Brentford (h), Wolves (h)
Romain Saiss (Wolves)
With rival teams wobbling, Wolves are making a credible push for the top four and a strong defensive record has been the foundation upon which their Champions League charge has been built. Manchester City are the only side to have conceded fewer league goals than Bruno Lage’s men this season ahead of their double gameweek. Romain Saiss offers a big set-piece threat and can become the latest player to capitalise on Leicester’s obvious vulnerability from such situations in the first of Wolves’ two fixtures.
Price: £5.0m Points: 88 Gameweek 26 fixture(s): Leicester (h), Arsenal (a)
Andy Robertson (Liverpool)
With managers limited to selecting a maximum of three players per club, the popular Liverpool triple-up this season has been Trent Alexander-Arnold, Diogo Jota and Mo Salah. There is a strong case to be made that Andy Robertson has displaced Jota for the third and final slot, given the depth of quality that Jurgen Klopp has for the front three positions. Robertson has only got one dreaded two-pointer in his last 10 games having provided seven assists, scored one goal and kept six clean sheets in that run.
Price: £7.1m Points: 106 Gameweek 26 fixture(s): Norwich (h), Leeds (h)
Wilfried Zaha (Crystal Palace)
With Conor Gallagher ineligible to face his parent club Chelsea and Michael Olise and Odsonne Edouard liable to be rotated, Wilfried Zaha looks to be the pick of the Crystal Palace squad this week. Since returning from the Africa Cup of Nations, Zaha has played the full 90 minutes in both of his games and had more shots (six) than any other Palace player, scoring with one of them – a beauty from the edge of the box – against Norwich in Gameweek 24.
Price: £6.8m Points: 70 Gameweek 26 fixture(s): Chelsea (h), Watford (a)
Son Heung-min (Spurs)
A double gameweek that features a trip to the Etihad is effectively a single gameweek given the imperious form that Manchester City have been. Even more so given the week that Spurs have just had. If you want to invest in a player from Antonio Conte’s out-of-sorts squad, though, Son Heung-min is the most obvious candidate to spend your FPL tokens on. The South Korean has accumulated 28 more points than any of his teammates and has only failed to provide an attacking return of any description in one of his last eight matches.
Price: £10.7m Points: 117 Gameweek 26 fixture(s): Man City (a), Burnley (a)
Mo Salah (Liverpool)
Has there ever been a more obvious time to play the Triple Captain chip than this week? Mo Salah, the Premier League’s top goalscorer has home games against Norwich and Leeds, teams with the worst and third-worst defensive records away from home this season. Although there is merit to deploying the bench boost chip with a lot of well-owned single gameweekers having good fixtures, not triple captaining Salah if you have the means to do so is making the game more complicated than it needs to be.
Price: £13.0m Points: 181 Gameweek 26 fixture(s): Norwich (h), Leeds (h)
Jarrod Bowen (West Ham)
The only single gameweek player included. Since New Year’s Day, Jarrod Bowen has run up 54 points, 13 more than any other player. The winger’s goal and assist in Sunday’s 2-2 draw against Leicester meant that he earned a fourth double-digit score in his last seven matches. West Ham’s upcoming opponents Newcastle have won three consecutive matches to boost their survival chances, but Bowen is well capable of causing them trouble having provided at least a goal or assist in each of his last five home games.
Price: £7.0m Points: 148 Gameweek 26 fixture: Newcastle (h)
Maxwel Cornet (Burnley)
As already mentioned, Burnley have a double-double coming up as they play four matches in the next two gameweeks. Both Maxwel Cornet (£5.9m) and Wout Weghorst (£6.5m) are worthy of consideration for that run, but the Ivorian pips his strike partner in this week’s selections due to question marks over the Dutchman’s fitness. Listed as a midfielder in FPL, Cornet has played as a striker in seven of his 12 league appearances. His 1.69 shots per game is more than any other Burnley player.
Price: £5.9m Points: 57 Gameweek 26 fixture(s): Brighton (a), Spurs (h)
Alexandre Lacazette (Arsenal)
For virtually the entirety of his Arsenal career Alexandre Lacazette operated in the shadows of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, but following his strike partner’s move to Barcelona he is now the focal point of Mikel Arteta’s attack. The Frenchman hasn’t been especially prolific this season, scoring only three times in 17 league outings, but with a dearth of in-form strikers to pick from he could be worth a short-term punt for Arsenal’s promising Gameweek 26 fixtures.
Price: £8.3m Points: 53 Gameweek 26 fixture(s): Brentford (h), Wolves (h)
