Ralf Rangnick has revealed that the arrest of Mason Greenwood led the club to block Jesse Lingard’s loan move from Old Trafford.
Lingard had hoped to leave Manchester United before deadline day, with West Ham and Newcastle both offering him first team football on loan. But the winger was disappointed when United stopped his departure on Monday.
As a consequence, Lingard will not play as United return to action in Friday’s FA Cup tie against Middlesbrough, with the player requesting time off to “clear his mind.”
And Rangnick confirmed that Greenwood’s club suspension played a role in United’s decision.
He said: “In a way, yes. But in the end the board also told me they couldn’t find an agreement with any clubs interested in him. With the window closing Monday evening the board informed me they would rather he stay, that’s a decision I could fully understand and accept.
“It was two things. One, we had a problem with Mason Greenwood and being without a player for the time being who has played regularly in the last couple of weeks. And, on the other hand, the club couldn’t find an agreement with any other club.”
The decision clearly upset Lingard who has started just two games this season, both in cup competitions.
It led to him requesting leave to miss the FA Cup game, despite it being precisely the sort of fixture he could expect to start.
Rangnick confirmed: “He asked me and the club if we could give him a couple of days off to clear up his mind.
“He will be back in the group Monday and then a regular part of the whole squad again.”
Greenwood was arrested on Sunday on suspicion of rape and assault. He was released on bail on Wednesday morning. United have confirmed that Greenwood will not play for, or train with, the club until further notice.
