UK and Ireland announce bid to host Euro 2028 across five countries but rule out joint World Cup 2030 proposal

The football associations of England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland have launched a joint bid to host Euro 2028 and dropped out of the running to hold the 2030 World Cup.

In a statement on Monday morning, the English Football Association announced that following an “extensive feasibility study” which factored in economic and political issues, all five associations decided to focus on a joint bid for the European Championships.

The FA said that hosting a European Championship would offer a “similar return on investment” to a World Cup and would be far less expensive to deliver.

Uefa set a deadline of Wednesday 23 March for national associations to confirm their interest in hosting the competition with a final bid dossier to be submitted 12 April 2023. Uefa are expected to announce the Euro 2028 hosts in September next year.

Euro 2020 was the first championship to be held across multiple countries to mark the competition’s 60th anniversary.

The tournament was held across 11 cities across the continent including Glasgow and London with the final between England and Italy played at Wembley Stadium.

Dublin had also been scheduled to host matches but were stripped of the opportunity after the Irish government was unable to provide assurances to Uefa over how many spectators could attend due to Covid.

English Football Association statement in full

Following an extensive feasibility study, which assessed the potential opportunities in international football, the football associations of England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales and the Republic of Ireland have agreed to focus on a bid to host Uefa EURO 2028, the third largest sports event in the world.

The feasibility study included an analysis of the economic impact, the political football landscape and likely costs of hosting major international tournaments. On balance, the five associations have decided to focus solely on an official bid to host Uefa EURO 2028, and have agreed not to bid for the 2030 Fifa World Cup.

Hosting a Uefa EURO offers a similar return on investment, with the European tournament carrying a far lower delivery cost and the potential of the benefits being realised sooner.

It would be an honour and a privilege to collectively host Uefa EURO 2028 and to welcome all of Europe. It would also be a wonderful opportunity to demonstrate the true impact of hosting a world-class football tournament by driving positive change and leaving a lasting legacy across our communities.

We believe the UK and the Republic of Ireland can offer Uefa and European football something special in 2028 – a compact and unique five-way hosting collaboration that will provide a great experience for the teams and the fans.

We continue to collaborate with our Government Partners of the UK and Ireland about the next steps.

Uefa will revert to a more traditional competition next time, however, with three-time winners Germany hosting it on their own after receiving three times as many votes as rival bidders Turkey.
