Celtic fans unfurled another anti-monarchy banner and chanted “if you hate the Royal Family clap your hands” before their Scottish Premiership match against St Mirren on Sunday.
A sign with the same message was visible before kick-off at St Mirren Park and supporters proceeded to chant throughout a minute’s applause, organised in tribute to Queen Elizabeth II.
Boos from St Mirren fans could be heard in response and Sky Sports issued an on-air apology with lead commentator Ian Crocker saying: “Apologies if you were offended by anything you might have heard. Most people showed respect some did not.”
Celtic are being investigated by Uefa after supporters displayed an anti-monarchy banner before and during their game against Shakhtar Donetsk in Warsaw on Wednesday night.
BT Sport issued an apology to viewers after a banner which read “F___ the crown” was shown prior to the Champions League match. Another sign saying “Sorry for your loss, Michael Fagan,” in reference to the intruder who infiltrated Buckingham Palace in 1982, was also visible.
Prior to Sunday’s game against St Mirren, Celtic manager Ange Postecoglu said that his side would “abide by the protocols” before the match.
“I have the same message to our fans that we always have As I said before the game [against Shakhtar], we will abide by the protocols. We wore black armbands on Wednesday night,” he said.
“I think there’s a minute’s applause [on Sunday], we will abide by whatever obligations and responsibilities we have as a football club. We will do that in a respectful manner. We want our supporters to do the same.”
