Rangers are set to avoid any disciplinary action despite defying Uefa’s orders not to play the national anthem before their Champions League game against Napoli.
Uefa received requests from clubs to sing the anthem before kick off as a mark of respect with the nation in mourning following the Queen’s death. But the governing body turned them down, stating that clubs should instead hold a minute’s silence instead.
Rangers decided to thwart the order at Ibrox but Uefa has decided not to take any further action.
A Uefa spokesperson told i : “The incident you refer to is not the subject of any Uefa disciplinary proceedings.”
Uefa’s disciplinary committee were awaiting the report from match officials before making a decision on Thursday.
A giant silhouette of the Queen in front of a union jack was on display across a stand behind one goal before the game, which Rangers lost.
It is thought that Manchester City and Chelsea also requested permission to sing God Save the King before kickoff of their respective Champions League matches, but both clubs obeyed instructions not to play the anthem.
