What happens to Fantasy Premier League this week? How cancelled fixtures affect FPL, from transfers to points

Fantasy Premier League have confirmed that Gameweek 7 will proceed despite the Premier League’s announcement that all fixtures this weekend will be postponed as a mark of respect following the Queen’s death.

The Premier League, English Football League and Women’s Super League confirmed on Friday morning that all matches scheduled to take place this weekend — including on Friday and Monday — have been called off.

i understands that next weekend’s games are also at risk of being rescheduled due to a lack of available policing with the Queen’s funeral expected to take place on Monday 19 September.

Richard Masters, the Premier League’s chief executive said: “We and our clubs would like to pay tribute to Her Majesty’s long and unwavering service to our country. As our longest-serving monarch, she has been an inspiration and leaves behind an incredible legacy following a life of dedication.

“This is a tremendously sad time for not just the nation but also for the millions of people around the world who admired her, and we join together with all those in mourning her passing.”

FPL has provided some clarity on what the Premier League’s decision means for the game:

Points and transfers

Gameweek 7 will still take place but given there are no matches being played, managers will not receive any points from their chosen players.

The exception to this is if managers have already accumulated points hits by buying new players for their squads. In other words, if you’ve made three transfers at a loss of -4 points, that will be your Gameweek 7 score.

Matches in Head to Head leagues will be drawn unless one manager has accrued more points deductions than the other through transfers.

All matches in Fantasy Draft will be drawn as making transfers does not incur points penalties.

Wildcard, Free Hit, Bench Boost and Triple Captain chips

If you had planned to Bench Boost — play all 15 of your players rather than a starting XI — or use Triple Captain — treble your captain’s points — you can opt out this week and be able to use the chip later on in the season.

Those who used the Free Hit chip, where unlimited transfers are allowed for one gameweek without incurring a points hit, will also have it reinstated, but Wildcards will roll over until the next gameweek.

Those who have already used Wildcard ahead of the Gameweek 7 deadline will be able to keep making unlimited transfers to their teams without incurring any points hits until the next active gameweek.

What happens next?

It looks unlikely that FPL will add additional gameweeks on top of the standard 38 as it did during the 2019-20 campaign which was stopped and then halted altogether due to Covid.

On that occasion, gameweeks carried on with players scoring zero points until the Premier League confirmed that the season would be paused indefinitely, at which point FPL was also halted.

Once the season returned, FPL added more gameweeks to make up for the ones that had been lost.

However, it looks as though Gameweek 7 (and potentially Gameweek 8 if next weekend’s fixtures are also postponed) will be added into an existing gameweek later on in the season.

This essentially means that there will be a double gameweek at some point down the line, whenever this weekend’s postponed matches are rescheduled.
