Crystal Palace vs Leeds: Player ratings and analysis as Eberechi Eze delivers where Rodrigo fails

Crystal Palace 2-1 Leeds (Edouard 24′, Eze 76′ | Struijk 10′)

Eberechi Eze’s delightful strike earned Crystal Palace a 2-1 comeback win against Leeds United and end a four-game winless run for boss Patrick Vieira.

Eze collected a neat flick from Wilfried Zaha on the edge of the box and drilled low past Illan Meslier midway through the second half to secure the three points.

Pascal Struijk had fired Leeds in front just 10 minutes in when converting Brendan Aaronson’s shot off the post, as the visitors started strongly at Selhurst Park.

But an inch-perfect Michael Olise free kick got Palace back level when he picked out Odsonne Edouard’s head at the far post.

More on Crystal Palace FC

Patrick Bamford had the chance to put Leeds back ahead but was denied by Vicente Guaita, and Jordan Ayew – who eventually came off after suffering a blow to the head – saw a golden opportunity blocked by Rasmus Kristensen.

Here’s how the players rated on Sunday.

Crystal Palace ratings

Vicente Guaita – Had a relatively quiet afternoon and was unable to do anything about Leeds’ opener. Had one scare when being hounded by Bamford but other than that was fairly steady. 7

Joel Ward – Restricted for much of the first hour by Leeds’ persistent play down his flank, but gradually became more dominant. 6

Joachim Andersen – Cool headed and composed, he stood up well to both Bamford and then Rodrigo. Was alert to Leeds’ deep runs all afternoon. 8

Marc Guehi – Booked early on after being turned by Bamford but helped prevent Leeds from threatening the Palace goal in the second half. 6

Jeffrey Schlupp – Had a fairly quiet game. Leeds’ general efforts to play down the centre and left wing meant Schlupp was a far-post bystander for most of the afternoon. 6

Michael Olise – Delivered a magnificent free kick to split the Leeds defence for Palace’s opening goal, but had a fair time of it on Sunday against the persistent Roca and Struijk. 7

Cheick Doucoure – An early booking restricted Doucoure’s influence in the middle of the park against an impactful Leeds midfield. Was replaced by Milivojevic. 6

Eberechi Eze – Had a quiet game until he lit up Selhurst Park with a stellar strike 15 minutes from time. From then on he played as though the pitch was his own. Composed and assured. 7

Jordan Ayew – Suffered a head injury when clearing a Leeds ball and needed five stitches at the break. Managed to last until the hour mark. 7

Odsonne Edouard – Led the line well and got his goal, but was often left isolated with both Koch and Cooper to deal with. Palace’s best chances came from their wings, not through the middle, yet Edouard still ended up on the scoresheet. 8

Wilfried Zaha – Stifled in the first half so much that he had a long on-pitch chat with boss Vieira during a stoppage in play. Always eager to run at his man but Kristensen was disciplined in his defensive duties. Came inside and provided the flick for Eze’s goal. A moment of magic. 7

Subs

Luka Milivojevic – Replaced Doucoure but didn’t really offer much more in terms of attacking threat. Gave the ball away a fair few times. 5

Tyrick Mitchell – On for Ayew and ended up playing against Leeds’ Summerville, neither player of whom offered anything of note. 6

Jean-Phillipe Mateta – N/A

Will Hughes – N/A

Leeds ratings

Illan Meslier – Had a fairly quiet afternoon. Like Guaita, was not at fault for the goals he conceded. A standard steady performance from a consistent keeper. Let down by his defence for Palace’s second. 7

Pascal Struijk – Opened the scoring and looked effortlessly comfortable on the ball down Leeds’ left. Proof Marsch has an answer to the left-back problem for now at least. 8

Liam Cooper – Leeds defend better with Cooper in the team and while Eze’s goal was a moment of magic, he perhaps could have done better to deny Ayew a clear header for Palace’s first. 6

Robin Koch – Looks at his most comfortable alongside captain Cooper but failed to close down Eze for Palace’s second. 6

Rasmus Kristensen – Perhaps his best performance in a Leeds shirt since he arrived in the summer. The Dane was disciplined when matching up against Zaha and blocked Ayew’s sure goal in the second half. 7

Marc Roca – The less eye-catching of Leeds’ two central midfielders, Roca did his holding job as expected but was dragged over when Eze found the net. 6

Tyler Adams – Marshalled the midfield well and was often the man orchestrating the press. 7

Jack Harrison – Busy the entire game and perhaps Leeds’ best player in the first half. Pined Joel Ward back and linked up well with Struijk. 8

Rodrigo – Far more quiet than Aaronson or Harrison. Did the hounding that Marsch requires in the first half, but on the ball was found lacking quality. Waned as the match wore on and was finally replaced after passing the ball out of play for a goal kick. 5

Brenden Aaronson – Gave Leeds the forward outlet they have lacked in recent games by driving through the middle and linking up with Bamford and Rodrigo. Was replaced by Klich. 7

Patrick Bamford – Provided the stability up front Leeds otherwise lack. Happy to drop deep and lay off to the overlapping midfield, but also squandered a great one-on-one chance. Came off on 62 minutes Leeds are a different team without him. 7

Subs

Crysencio Summerville – Barely touched the ball out wide on the right. 5

Mateusz Klich – Was brought on to disrupt things but Leeds conceded almost as soon as he graced the field. Has fared well as a sub for Leeds in recent weeks but didn’t do much here. 5

Luke Ayling – N/A

Joe Gelhardt – N/A
