Why is Arsenal vs Man City postponed? The rescheduling of this week’s Premier League fixture explained

Arsenal currently find themselves four points clear at the top of the Premier League table, after grinding out a 1-0 win over Leeds United on Sunday.

Favourites Manchester City remain in second but lost a little ground in the title race with a 1-0 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield.

Despite winning nine of their opening 10 games, many are still questioning whether Arsenal are legitimate contenders. The real test? A game against City, that was scheduled to take place this week.

However, the game has been postponed, meaning fans are forced to wait a bit longer for the top of the table clash.

Why has Arsenal vs Man City been postponed?

City were set to travel to the Emirates on Wednesday 19 October.

The game has been postponed to make room for Arsenal’s Europa League fixture against Dutch side PSV Eindhoven.

This game was supposed to take place in London on 15 September, but was called off due to policing concerns, with numbers spread thin due to the death of the Queen the week prior.

Uefa told Arsenal they must complete the fixture by 3 November or forfeit the game, so the Premier League allowed them to place the game this Wednesday.

A statement from the Premier League said: ” The Premier League has agreed with Uefa to postpone Arsenal FC’s Premier League match with Manchester City FC, originally due to be played on 19 October, to allow for Arsenal FC’s re-arranged Uefa Europa League game with PSV Eindhoven.

“Arsenal FC vs PSV Eindhoven, originally scheduled to be played on Thursday 15 September, will now be played on Thursday 20 October 18.00.”

When will the game be played?

A date has yet to be set for the rearranged fixture.

“A new date for the Arsenal FC vs Manchester City FC fixture will be announced in due course,” the Premier League said.

The crammed schedule means it looks likely the game will not be played until after the World Cup, meaning some time in the new year.

The winter World Cup has made for an unusual Premier League season. The last fixtures of 2022 will be on 13 November, with the first game of the tournament in Qatar just four days later.

The World Cup final is on 18 December, with Premier League returning for its traditional Boxing Day fixtures.
