Pele ‘remains in stable condition’ and is responding ‘well to treatment’, according to hospital

Brazilian soccer great Pele remains in stable condition after being hospitalised amid his colon cancer battle, according to the hospital where he is being treated.

Pele, 82, has also responded well to treatment for a respiratory infection diagnosed this week and his condition has not worsened in the last 24 hours, medics at Albert Einstein Hospital in São Paulo Brazil say.

The hospital said on Friday Pele was in a stable condition after being admitted on Tuesday night to re-evaluate his cancer treatment after having a tumor removed from his colon in September 2021.

A statement from the hospital said the three-time World Cup winner had made a good response to treatment for respiratory infection care”, adding he was undergoing a “reassessment of chemotherapy treatment”.

Earlier today Brazilian newspaper Folha de S.Paulo sparked concerns about the footballer’s health when it reported he had been receiving ”end-of-life care” after chemotherapy stopped having the expected results.

The newspaper report also claimed Pele was suffering from general swelling and cardiac issues when he was admitted to hospital.

His manager, family members and the hospital have not confirmed that information.

On Thursday, Pele said in an Instagram post that he was at the hospital for a “monthly visit” and thanked his supporters for the positive messages he had received.

Pele, who played for Brazil and club sides Santos and New York Cosmos as a striker, is one of the world’s best known sportsmen, and is regarded as one of the best football players of all time.

He won the World Cup with Brazil three times, in 1958, 1962 and 1970 – a feat no other player has achieved 0 and is the team’s all-time leading goalscorer with 77 goals in 92 games.
