Jude Bellingham transfer: Why Real Madrid are willing to spend £115m – and what the fee means for Birmingham

Real Madrid have struck a deal worth up to £115m for England midfielder Jude Bellingham, who is expected to sign a six-year deal at the Bernabeu.

Bellingham is viewed as one of the outstanding midfield prospects in Europe and was a priority target for Real, who will pay £88.5m up front to Borussia Dortmund.

The Bundesliga side confirmed the deal with an “ad hoc announcement” on Wednesday afternoon, which confirmed both the upfront fee and an additional 30 per cent, which will be paid when Real Madrid and Bellingham hit certain milestones including success in the Champions League.

Formalities of the deal will be completed in the next few days, with a medical already scheduled. Official confirmation of the deal from the Real end is expected to follow.

The transfer is no surprise with Premier League interest having receded when it became clear Bellingham’s preference was a move to Spain.

Liverpool withdrew from negotiations in May, while Manchester City never formalised their long-standing interest after it became clear he wanted to move to Real. Similarly, Manchester United did not make an offer for a player they tried to sign in 2020.

i understands that Bellingham, like close friend Erling Haaland, used data as part of the decision-making process that dictated his crucial next move.

He has designs on winning the Ballon d’Or and believes a move to Real will test him in one of the most pressurised environments in European football.

A statement released by the German club read: “Jude Bellingham (“Player”) is about to transfer from Borussia Dortmund to Real Madrid CF.

“The parties have reached an agreement on the merits of this today. The contractual details still have to be coordinated and documented. The realization of the transfer is also subject to proper and timely processing in accordance with the provisions of the FIFA Transfer Matching System.

“Real Madrid will pay Dortmund fixed transfer compensation of EUR 103.0 million if the transfer is implemented. In addition, the payment of variable transfer fees up to a maximum total amount of around 30 per cent of the amount of the fixed transfer fee was agreed.

“The variable transfer fees are dependent on the achievement of certain sporting achievements by Real Madrid and/or sporting achievements or performance by the player at Real Madrid over the next six seasons.”

Birmingham City are entitled to 5 per cent of the fee, which means the Championship club will rake in around £4.25m when the transfer is confirmed.
