Roy Hodgson was “taken ill during this morning’s training session” and will not attend a planned press conference amid reports of his sacking, Crystal Palace have said.
Former Wolfsburg and Eintracht Frankfurt boss Oliver Glasner is reportedly lined up to replace Hodgson, who has been at the club since 2023 in his second stint in charge.
Palace have won just three of their past 19 games in all competitions and fans have protested at recent matches against Hodgson’s style of football and the board’s perceived lack of ambition.
Palace lost 3-1 to Chelsea on Monday evening at Selhurst Park, which has left them 15th in the Premier League, just five points above the relegation zone.
Hodgson’s press conference was set to take place at 1.30pm this afternoon and was cancelled with little over 30 minutes notice as reports of his imminent departure have intensified.
The 76-year-old was reappointed to replace Patrick Vieira in March 2023, having previously managed Palace from 2017-2021 before his first retirement.
The club announced: “Unfortunately, today’s press conference will no longer take place as scheduled as Roy Hodgson was taken ill during this morning’s training session.”
Austrian coach Glasner has been out of work since leaving Eintracht Frankfurt last summer, where he won the Europa League in 2021-22 and reached the DFB Pokal final in 2022-23.
The former defender has been compared to Ange Postecoglou and Thomas Frank for his direct, pressing football, tending to set up in a 3-4-2-1 formation.
Glasner is reportedly Palace’s second choice, after Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna turned down their advances in order to continue pursuing his current side’s Championship promotion ambitions.
Former England boss Hodgson has been criticised for his side’s dull, unambitious defensive football, which has also been badly affected by injuries to key players.
Michael Olise, Eberechi Eze, Cheick Doucoure and Marc Guehi are all currently unavailable, worsening Hodgson’s already difficult situation.
Fans have also pointed to the club’s record of finishing between 10th and 15th every season since their promotion in 2013-14 as an example of their lack of progress.
Hodgson could be sacked as early as this afternoon, with Glasner currently unemployed, making him an easier hire than most.
