Sven-Goran Eriksson given chance to manage Liverpool after cancer diagnosis

Sven-Goran Eriksson will get to live out his lifelong dream of managing Liverpool after he announced his terminal cancer diagnosis last month.

Eriksson will be part of a Liverpool Legends management team as they face Ajax Legends at Anfield on 23 March, alongside Ian Rush, John Barnes and John Aldrige.

Former England boss Eriksson announced last month he has “best case a year” to live after being diagnosed with cancer.

He said at the time he had “always wished to be the manager of Liverpool” and that he was a lifelong fan.

Eriksson managed England from 2001 to 2006, taking charge at three major tournaments, as part of a 42-year managerial career which spanned Sweden, China and Ivory Coast.

He was in charge for England’s famous 5-1 win over Germany in Munich in 2001, taking the Three Lions to the quarter-finals of Euro 2004 and the 2006 World Cup.

Eriksson also managed Manchester City and Leicester, as well as Benfica, Lazio, Sampdoria and the Philippines national team.

In January, Jurgen Klopp said: “I heard for the first time about his admiration or love for Liverpool and that he was a fan for his whole life.

“I heard now about the Legends [game] and stuff like that. I’m not in charge of that.

“The only thing I can say is absolutely he’s very welcome to come here and he can sit in my seat in my office and do my job for a day if he wants. That’s no problem.

“Being on the sideline might be a little bit more difficult. To have him here and show him everything and how this wonderful club developed over the years, I think that’s definitely something we will tell him.

“He can come over and have a few wonderful hours here, I’m sure.”

Liverpool said: “All connected with the club and LFC Foundation look forward to warmly welcoming LFC fan Sven and his family to Anfield – and seeing him in the dugout on the day – for a fantastic fundraising occasion.”

Eriksson will be managing a group of players including Jerzy Dudek, Martin Skrtel, Ryan Babel, Djibril Cisse, Fabbio Aurelio and Gregory Vignal.
