Everton target two loan moves with Calvert-Lewin’s future still uncertain

Everton are exploring a loan move for Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips, who is a long-term target of boss Sean Dyche.

i understands the club have also made enquiries about Chelsea striker Armando Broja but budgetary concerns mean they are now only looking at loan moves for the rest of the transfer window.

Everton have two loan slots – one domestic and one overseas – and are looking to strengthen in midfield after selling Amadou Onana to Aston Villa.

Despite an underwhelming loan at West Ham last season, there is still enthusiasm for bringing Phillips to Goodison Park if a financial agreement can be found.

The former England international will be allowed to leave the Etihad and has alternative interest abroad and in the Premier League, with Fulham and Ipswich Town having both made checks on the 28-year-old.

He is only two years into a six year deal at City after leaving Leeds United in a £42m deal but would appear to have no future under Pep Guardiola.

He has mostly been used in the centre of defence in pre-season, where he has delivered some accomplished displays, but wants regular starts to kick-start his career.

Everton could offer him that although Tim Iroegbunam, signed from Villa in a £9m deal in June, has impressed and is in line to start this weekend’s Premier League opener against Brighton with James Garner doubtful through injury.

They do need numbers to supplement their squad, however, and are looking into more loan moves.

Everton are also looking to shift players out, with Mason Holgate and Michael Keane both having been made available.

But with the transfer market still flat, there has been precious little interest.

The same is true of Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who scored in Everton’s final pre-season game against Roma, but is yet to sign a new contract and is moving into the final year of his deal.

The Toffees would be duty-bound to listen to offers for Calvert-Lewin given his contractual status but after Newcastle’s approach earlier in the summer there has been no further offers.

Any move for Broja, who is understood to be keen on joining Everton if the opportunity arises, would only happen if Calvert-Lewin departed.

It would be fitting that a busy summer at Everton ends with further ins and outs given the work done to both refresh the squad and stay within the Profitability and Sustainability Regulations (PSR) boundaries.

That they have done so while retaining Jarrad Branthwaite – the defender is almost certain to remain at Everton after the club rebuffed two bids from Manchester United – represents solid work from director of football Kevin Thelwell.
