Newcastle United would target Chelsea’s Noni Madueke if they opt to sell winger Miguel Almiron to Major League Soccer side Charlotte FC.
i understands that an approach has been made for Almiron from Charlotte FC but sources say an agreement is not close between Newcastle and the club coached by former Aston Villa boss Dean Smith.
Indeed he is regarded by the Magpies as an important part of the squad so it would take a sizeable offer to persuade Newcastle to sell.
The MLS transfer window shuts on Wednesday so any agreement would have to fast-tracked and ratified quickly.
Charlotte officials are in London working on deals and their approach for Almiron – if succesful – would unlock possible incomings for Newcastle, who hold a long-term interest in Madueke but continue to work with one eye on complying with the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Regulations (PSR).
i first revealed that in June and a summer move for Pedro Neto means that Chelsea could be tempted to sell a winger they signed for £29m.
Newcastle have good links with the hierarchy at Stamford Bridge and Eddie Howe is understood to be a fan of the England Under-21 international.
Meanwhile, Newcastle have tabled a third offer for Marc Guehi after a weekend of talks with Crystal Palace over the England defender.
An offer understood to be worth £55m with achievable add-ons which could take the deal past £60m has been tabled in the past 24 hours.
It is not understood to represent a “take it or leave it” offer but Newcastle are seeking a resolution after more than a week of negotiations.
As i reported last week, the Magpies are working on other targets – and are especially keen on AC Milan’s Malick Thiaw – but their priority appears to be Guehi.
Their need for a centre-back is acute given injuries to Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles, and Guehi, who has two years left on his contract, represents a very attractive option.
But whether Palace budge on their initial valuation of around £70m remains to be seen.
