England v Colombia player ratings: Pickford and Dier the heroes of penalty shootout win

England did what they never do: they won a penalty shootout. Eric Dier’s spotkick after a nervy, tense clash against Colombia puts the Three Lions into a World Cup quarter-final against Sweden.
Captain Harry Kane had opened the scoring from the penalty spot to extend his lead in the Golden Boot race.
But Colombia struck back at the death with towering defender Yerry Mina nodding home from a corner to take the game into extra-time and then penalties.

England

Ashley Young: Utility man saw plenty of the ball in opening minutes as England started on front foot. Never stopped running at either end and experience came to fore as Colombians used every trick 6
Jesse Lingard: Worked hard and made opportunities with clever movement and positioning. Struggled to get much joy from giant defenders. Control let him down 6
Dele Alli: Brought back after missing two group matches and provided early impetus before injury struggle. Headed just over on stretch but limited overall impact 6
Raheem Sterling: Linked up well with Lingard, displaying quick feet. Found himself clear but shot blocked by Davinson and made fine turn away from same man 6
Harry Kane: Headed over cross from angle but well policed. Caught by Arias and won penalty before keeping nerve to chip home. Busied himself throughout  6
Jordan Pickford: Criticised keeper well protected and little to do until injury time. Gathered Quintero and Falcao shots but fine save from Uribe led to corner from which Mina levelled at the death 7
Kyle Walker: Mindful of picking up second booking. Used pace to cover Colombian counters and quick to support Trippier. Sloppy in possession late on 7
John Stones: Penalised at England corner after push on Lerma. Kept forwards quiet. Lucky not to be seen striking Falcao. Superb in possession and with passing 8
Harry Maguire: Stood up well to block Cuadrado effort on edge of area and carried ball forward well. Quick to snuff out danger but beaten in air for Mina leveller 8
Kieran Trippier: Early crosses caused panic and a crucial interception stopped Colombian counter. Curled free-kick narrowly wide and a constant attacking source but unable to keep Mina header out 7
Jordan Henderson: Place in side became more secure without playing last week but gave ball away twice early on. Went down after being caught in the neck by Barrios but led by example after the interval and held team together 7

Substitutes

Eric Dier replaced Alli for final 10 minutes in effort to see out the victory
Jamie Vardy came on in place of Sterling at the end of normal time
Danny Rose took Young’s place in extra-time and short across face of goal.
Walker made way for Marcus Rashford.
