Scottish viewers of England‘s World Cup matches are often left with a mixture of emotions – namely frustration, bewilderment and anger.
During ITV‘s coverage of England’s World Cup last-16 clash with Colombia last night, those emotions appeared to hit a crescendo as England triumphed 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in what was a tense and fiery encounter.
However, some viewers north of the border were left reeling by ITV’s punditry and commentary team, taking to Twitter to vent at the “biased” coverage.
‘Cringeworthy stuff’
The professionalism of the broadcaster was called into question, with some struggling to watch, while others simply hit the mute button.
Suggestion for TV coverage of the next major football tournament.
BBC and ITV offer, on the red button, 2 further commentary options. One from the nation playing England, in its national language. The other from a neutral English speaking broadcaster.
This is just painful.

Can’t get over the bias on @itvfootball last night. Understand English commentators and pundits want England to win, but there’s still a level of professionalism expected when it comes to media coverage that is watched by other nations and nationalities. Cringeworthy stuff.

23.6m viewers for ITV’s coverage last night. Despite ITV’s coverage last night.

I wish itv sport would realise that it covers the rest of the British isles when they have such biased co-commentators like ex England manager Glenn hoddle -viewers in Wales,Scotland and Ireland would like a more balanced view -there's 2 teams out there,Not just 1 in red!!!

I mean, I know that 'The English commentators are biased' thing is a bit cliched but this has been something else. Every corner they are DESPERATE for a penalty

Payback for ITV commentators referring to England as "we" on broadcasts that go to Scotland & Wales. https://t.co/MYXuqEzG9w

Why do some Scots want England to lose?
Many Scots find the media coverage of England at international tournaments unbearable – to the extent that they want to see the Three Lions knocked out.
Scotland: England have a likeable squad and manager and play some decent football, I'm so confused, I don't really have any reason not to support them…

English person: Why do Scots want England to lose?
Scottish person: *turns Clive Tyldesley and Glenn Hoddle to maximum volume*

‘Will haunt me for some time’
The punditry team in the ITV studio included three former England internationals with 140 caps between them. But their take on the match, especially some of the controversial incidents, provoked a backlash north of the border.
The sound of the studio pundits' blubbering sobs will haunt me for some time.
— Jamie Borthwick (@jamiekborthwick) July 3, 2018
Something wrong with sound on my TV. Did pundits say Henderson cheated? Jaw was that sore he clutched his forehead.
— Ewan Murray (@mrewanmurray) July 3, 2018
If England somehow contrive to get papped out here the itv coverage back in the studio will be the comedy event of the millennium.

Have always thought the “biased pundits” chat is tiresome but ITV’s coverage tonight is absolutely wild. Dark arts, intimidation, provocation, injustice. You’d think Voldemort himself was prowling the touchline in a Colombia tracksuit #COLENG

The former England manager Glenn Hoddle was singled out for criticism among some Scottish viewers.

Glenn Hoddle talking mince, McGuire admonishing ref not saying there no foul!!!
— Brian McClair (@BrianMcClair13) July 3, 2018
But even Hoddle was overshadowed by commentator Clive Tyldesley.
On the one hand, that equaliser is very funny. On the other, extra time means another thirty minutes of Clive Tyldesley and Glenn Hoddle. pic.twitter.com/2J3L6kIug1
— Kenny Stewart (@Kenny__Stewart) July 3, 2018
Clive Tyldesley is absolutely insufferable. Truly sickening. #WorldCup

“Don’t you dare go away”……… oh Clive, believe me us Scots aren’t going anywhere!!!
— Lee Mair (@LMairzo) July 3, 2018
I’d imagine if you were watching a football match in hell, Clive Tyldesley and Mark Lawrenson would be the commentators.
— David Wren (@DWren6) July 3, 2018
When you remember that that was only the last 16 tonight
Tyldesley’s commentary was embarrassing at times.
