Arsenal penalty: Why VAR awarded Alexandre Lacazette spot-kick at half-time against Aston Villa

Arsenal were awarded a penalty on the stroke of half-time after Alexandre Lacazette was brought down in the box by Lee Targett.

Referee Craig Pawson was then called to the VAR monitor to check the incident which saw the Gunners striker tackled from behind inside the box. However, crucially, Pawson had actually stopped play before the whistle in a neutral area of the pitch.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang subsequently saw his spot-kick saved by Emi Martinez but scored the rebound. Had half-time already commenced, then Aubameyang’s rebound would not have been allowed as Martinez’s save would have been considered the last action of the half.

Arsenal had already taken the lead through Thomas Partey’s first goal for the club.

Emile Smith Rowe then struck the ball at Tyrone Mings for a deflection that made it 3-0.

It was an unhappy return to the Emirates for Martinez, who was subjected to chants of “Aaron Ramsdale, he’s better than you.”

Lacazette’s evening also took a turn for the worse as he asked to be substituted in the 67th minute, replaced by Martin Odegaard.
