Mo Salah reveals how Liverpool’s dressing room vow to ‘write history’ when already 4-0 up at Man Utd

You don’t become one of the best footballers in the world without a ruthless streak, and Mo Salah and his Liverpool team-mates showed plenty of that in their 5-0 thumping of Manchester United.

Games like these don’t come around very often. In fact, no Liverpool side has ever won at Old Trafford by as large a margin as Jurgen Klopp’s team did on Sunday.

Afterwards, hat-trick hero Salah revealed that despite already being 4-0 up, the Liverpool players were already talking at half-time about repeat their scintillating first-half performance and ensuring their win over United went down in history.

“At half-time we talked in the dressing room about how we needed to write history,” Salah told Sky Sports.

“We just needed to keep going and keep scoring goals because a chance like this does not come often.

“It’s great to win 5-0 here away. We knew before the game it was going to be tough if we didn’t play our game but we managed to do that from the beginning which made it easier.

“From the beginning we just tried to get the ball in between the lines and keep the ball as long as we could to create more chances.”

With his team performing so well, it was no surprise that Klopp was full of praise for his players after what was his 200th win as Liverpool manager.

“What can I say? Did I expect that? No,” Klopp said. “What we did in the last third was absolutely insane: how we pressed them high, how we won balls, got the ball in the right areas and scored wonderful goals.

“The result is insane, I asked if there was one like this in history and if there isn’t then it will take a while. The players put a nice piece in the book.

“It is special but we won’t celebrate like crazy, we have respect for the opponents. We were lucky in some moments and United are not in their best moment.”

Praise also came from outside the dressing room, with Sky Sports pundits and former Liverpool players Graeme Souness and Jamie Carragher happy to wax lyrical about the side.

Souness said: “I thought they were fabulous.

“Liverpool look like a proper team. They look like they’ve got another gear and I think for Man United who were scratching around for a rhythm and a way of play, United have got lots of problems to solve before they become anything like a proper team.

“They have some fantastic footballers who are capable of great things but they’re not great players because they don’t do it often enough.”

Carragher concurred but also felt that Liverpool could have scored even more, saying: “You have to drink this in because it’ll never get better than that.”

“The only disappointment was that with half an hour to go they had 10 men and you’ll never get that opportunity again.

“Manchester United and Liverpool are the biggest rivals in world football so you won’t get that opportunity too often.”
