Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says he will not resign despite hitting ‘rock bottom’ against Liverpool

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has ruled out resigning as Manchester United manager after his side’s 5-0 drubbing at home to Liverpool.

An undisciplined, reckless and generally uninspired United side were blown away by Liverpool in the club’s worst ever home defeat to their traditional rivals.

But the Norwegian has pledged to fight on as United manager.

“I’ve come too far, we’ve come too far as a group and we’re too close to give up now,” Solskjaer told Sky Sports after the game.

“It’s not easy to say something apart from it’s the darkest day I’ve had leading these players.

He added: “We weren’t good enough individually and as a team.

“You can’t give a team like Liverpool those chances and unfortunately we did.

“The whole performance wasn’t good enough, that’s for sure.”

This sentiment was echoed in no uncertain terms by club captain Harry Maguire, whose calamitous coming together with Luke Shaw gave Trent Alexander-Arnold all the time in the world to tee up Diogo Jota for Liverpool’s second.

“First and foremost, apologies to the fans,” Maguire said.

“They stuck right with us and sung for us and we appreciate that, but for us as a club we’ve got to do better.

“I’m not here to analyse the game. They were really clinical, we had a lot of chances ourselves but conceding four in a half at this club is nowhere near good enough.”

The repetition in his answers reflected the shellshock which he and his teammates will be feeling after a truly dismal display.

“To lose to Liverpool in any game of football hurts,” the England international said. “They’re our rivals and the way we lost the game, 4-0 down at half-time in front of our fans, it wasn’t good enough.

“I know I keep coming back to that phrase but that’s the only way I can put it.”

Never one to shirk a harsh word or two, former United captain Gary Neville was scathing in his post-match analysis on Sky Sports.

“I didn’t think it would ever get as bad as that today,” he said.

“It’s always been a tight game more often than not but today that was a shocker, an absolute shocker.”

Neville went on to argue that the result was not an outlier but a true reflection – brutally exposed by elite opposition – of where United are at currently.

Neville added: “It’s been building now for a couple and weeks against half-decent teams but as soon as they’ve played a proper team they’re obliterated.

“That Manchester United group of players get out-run. They’re one of the lowest running teams in the league.

“There’s nothing worse than being one of the worst running teams in the league and being easy to play against.

“That’s a poor reflection upon the manager, the staff and the players.”
