Fantasy Premier League: The 5 best captain picks for Gameweek 10 – or four alternatives to in-form Mo Salah

*Starts article* The best captain choice for Gameweek 10 and beyond is Mo Salah. *Ends article*.

The case for auto-captaining Salah every week is growing stronger with each game given his mind-boggling exploits this season. Salah is 50 points clear at the top of the Fantasy Premier League standings, has hit double figures in six of his nine appearances so far, and has only failed to return once: against Burnley way back in Gameweek 3.

The Egyptian’s ownership is creeping up towards the 70 per cent mark and frankly, it is a risk to go into any gameweek without slapping the armband around one of his muscular biceps. You can bet your mortgage on Salah being the most captained player this weekend following his monstrous 24-point haul at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Gameweek 9 offered a painful reminder of the pitfalls of going against an obvious captain. Kai Havertz looked a decent bet against Norwich City but somehow managed to swerve any returns whatsoever despite playing up front for a team that won 7-0. Jamie Vardy and Harry Kane were other popular picks following Romelu Lukaku’s injury but were also unable to get on the scoresheet.

As already mentioned, Salah will be many people’s go-to captain for the foreseeable future until (a) his form starts to dip and/or (b) another player hits a hot streak. But if you fancy rolling the dice, here are a few others to consider.

Mo Salah (Liverpool)

Sorry, this is just a reminder that he really is the best option. Salah is three clear at the top of the Premier League‘s golden boot standings with 10 in total and has scored 15 goals in a dozen matches in all competitions. In terms of FPL, he is averaging 11.8 points per game, which extrapolated over a 38-game season would give him 451 in total. For reference, his top-scoring season in FPL so far was his first at Liverpool in 2017-18 when he hit 303 points.

Phil Foden (Man City)

Phil Foden has been Manchester City‘s standout player since returning from injury, scoring three goals and registering two assists in his previous three league games. The 21-year-old is listed as a midfielder on FPL but played as a central striker during City’s 4-1 win against Brighton and helped himself to a couple of goals and an assist for an 18-point haul. Saturday’s opponents Crystal Palace have conceded at least two goals in all four of their away games this season.

Michail Antonio (West Ham)

Michail Antonio’s productivity has slowed a little in recent weeks, but he offered a reminder of his qualities in West Ham‘s 1-0 victory against Spurs by scoring the winner. Only Salah (with 10 goals and five assists) has had more direct goal involvements than Antonio (six goals and three assists) in the Premier League this term. Aston Villa have been rather leaky of late, conceding eight goals in their previous three matches, including three against Wolves on their last outing at Villa Park.

Ben Chilwell (Chelsea)

Captaining a defender is always a bold move, particularly when their place in the starting line-up isn’t even 100 per cent guaranteed. But based on his recent output, Ben Chilwell could be a great option for Chelsea‘s visit to Newcastle. Chilwell has scored in each of his last four Premier League appearances (three this season) and is currently averaging 11.6 points per game, just shy of Salah’s total.

Differential: Kevin De Bruyne (Man City)

Kevin De Bruyne should be well rested ahead of City’s game with Crystal Palace after only playing the final 13 minutes of Saturday’s 4-1 victory against Brighton at the Amex. It has been a stop-start campaign for the exhausted Belgian thus far, but he offered a reminder of his qualities in Gameweek 8 when he accumulated 11 points in City’s 2-0 win over Burnley. Currently owned by only four per cent of managers, De Bruyne could be a great option for those looking to make ground on their mini-league rivals.
