Thomas Tuchel admitted that Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner will both be out for “some matches” after suffering injuries during Chelsea’s 4-0 win over Malmo in the Champions League on Wednesday night.
Lukaku twisted his ankle as he was fouled in the incident that led to Chelsea’s first penalty of the night and his strike partner Werner followed him off the pitch later in the first half after pulling his hamstring.
“I don’t regret it because he was decisive and things like this can happen, it’s just bad luck,” was Tuchel’s response to a question asking whether he regretted selecting Lukaku after admitting pre-match that he was “mentally tired”.
Chelsea are not the only team to have injury concerns ahead of this weekend’s matches. Leeds United’s injury list remains lengthy, Everton’s has grown and both Manchester United and Arsenal will have to assess a key player apiece ahead of their matches this weekend.
Here is all the latest team news for Fantasy Premier League (FPL) players ahead of this weekend’s Premier League matches, which begin with Arsenal hosting Aston Villa at the Emirates on Friday night.
Romelu Lukaku (£11.7m) and Timo Werner (£8.6m) are both unavailable for Chelsea’s match against Norwich City on Saturday. “Romelu twisted his ankle when he was fouled in the box and Timo has a hamstring injury, so it will take a while for both of them,” Tuchel said. Christian Pulisic (£7.9m) remains out after suffering a “little setback” on his return from an ankle injury. Norwich loanee Billy Gilmour (£4.4m) is ineligible to face his former club at Stamford Bridge.
Marcus Rashford (£9.4m) has impressed upon his return from back surgery, scoring in his first two matches of the season against Leicester and Atalanta. Rashford suffered a knock in the second of those matches, but Solskjaer is hopeful he’ll be able to play Liverpool. “It was a dead leg and sometimes it can take longer than what you want. But if we treat it well, he should be okay,” he said. Fred (£4.9m) suffered a hamstring strain in the dramatic win over Atalanta and is a doubt.
Jurgen Klopp hopes to have Curtis Jones (£5.0m) available for Liverpool’s trip to Old Trafford. “Hopefully, he will make the final steps this week [and] he is ready for Man United,” he said.
Meanwhile, Mikel Arteta was left furious at James McCarthur’s kick on Bukayo Saka (£6.4m) during Arsenal’s 2-2 draw against Crystal Palace and is unsure whether the 20-year-old will recover in time to face Villa. “He hasn’t trained yet, we have to assess him today [Thursday] and see how he is,” Arteta said. “It’s down to the doctors and himself to see how he recovers and how he is feeling between today and tomorrow.”
The good news for Leeds is that Raphinha (£6.6m) is available after missing last weekend’s 1-0 defeat to Southampton, but the bad news is that Patrick Bamford (£7.8m) and Luke Ayling (£4.4m) remain sidelined. Marcelo Bielsa also said that Saturday’s match against Wolves will come “too soon” for Kalvin Phillips (£4.9m) although he may be fit enough to be named on the bench.
Dean Smith will welcome Leon Bailey (£6.4m) and Bertrand Traore (£5.8m) back into the fold for Villa’s meeting with Arsenal after their recent injury lay-offs. Matty Cash (£5.1m) is also available after hobbling off with a dead leg in the 3-2 loss to Wolves last weekend.
Wilfried Zaha (£7.0m) was a notable absentee from Crystal Palace’s draw with Arsenal but Patrick Vieira suggested he could return to face Newcastle. “He is feeling better, but it wasn’t good enough for him to be part of this one today,” Vieira said. Eberechi Eze (£5.9m) is making good progress from his ruptured Achilles, but Vieira has insisted they will not rush him back to action.
It has been another tough week on the injury front for Rafa Benitez with the in-form Abdoulaye Doucoure (£5.7m) fracturing his foot. The Frenchman is expected to be absent for six to seven weeks. Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£8.0m) has also suffered a setback on his return from a thigh injury with Benitez stating that he “will remain out for a number of weeks”. Richarlison (£7.4m) may be able to return to face his former club Watford after missing the last four gameweeks with a knee issue.
Youri Tielemans (£6.4m) has been in inspired form for Leicester but he appeared to pick up a small knock during the Europa League win against Spartak Moscow and will be assessed. Brendan Rodgers also revealed that Timothy Castagne (£5.3m) pulled his hamstring before that match. Rodgers is hopeful that Ayoze Perez (£5.8m) will be available to play Brentford after an illness.
Tomas Soucek (£5.9m) had to undergo plastic surgery after suffering a facial injury in West Ham’s win against Everton but is available to play this weekend. “He’s had stitches in his lip, in his cheek and above his nose as well,” David Moyes revealed. “I think he’s fine. There’s a decision whether we rest him, but I don’t think his injury is any reason not to play him.”
Adam Webster (£4.4m) has an “outside chance” of featuring against Manchester City, according to Brighton boss Graham Potter, which could have a knock-on effect for popular FPL asset Shane Duffy (£4.4m).
Ralph Hasenhuttl will have Che Adams (£6.8m) available for selection after he missed last week’s win over Leeds. Adam Armstrong (£6.0m) was surprisingly dropped for that game, but Hasenhuttl has backed him to end his goalscoring drought. “We have a lot of options up front,” he said. “He can score goals, he shows that in every [training] session. It won’t take long until he scores his second in the league.” James Ward-Prowse (£6.3m) is still suspended.
Sean Dyche will make a late call on Ben Mee (£4.9m), Charlie Taylor (£4.4m) and Matej Vydra (£5.2m) for Burnley’s fixture against Southampton at St Mary’s.
Yoane Wissa (£5.9m) has played the role of super-sub for Brentford recently but will be missing this weekend. “Wissa got a knock and twisted his ankle a bit in training earlier this week, that’s why he is out for, hopefully, only a couple of weeks,” said Thomas Frank last week.
Ferran Torres (£6.8m) will be out of action for “two to three months” according to Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola.
Jonjo Shelvey (£5.3m) is suspended for Newcastle’s game against Crystal Palace after being sent off against Spurs.
