Ominously for the rest of the Premier League, table-topping Chelsea’s injury list has started to ease following last week’s 7-0 thrashing of Norwich at Stamford Bridge.
Thomas Tuchel’s bench for the midweek Carabao Cup win against Southampton had a makeshift look to it, but he is set to be boosted by the return of four key players for Saturday’s match with Newcastle.
Elsewhere, Marcelo Bielsa offered a relatively promising update on Raphinha’s fitness, while Brentford will have to find a way to cope without their No 1 goalkeeper David Raya for the coming months after he sustained a knee ligament injury.
Here’s all the key team news ahead of this weekend’s top-flight action, featuring updates on a number of popular Fantasy Premier League assets.
Tuchel has been given a boost after four players returned to training on Thursday. Cesar Azpilicueta (£6.2m), Andreas Christensen (£5.1m), N’Golo Kante (£4.9m) and Christian Pulisic (£7.9m) could all come into contention for the trip to Newcastle. Romelu Lukaku (£11.5m) and Timo Werner (£8.6m) are both still out, however.
The lack of strength in depth in Leeds’ squad has been exposed this season with some key players missing a number of matches through injury. Patrick Bamford (£7.8m) remains sidelined, as do Luke Ayling (£4.4m) and Robin Koch (£4.3m) but Bielsa is hopeful over the availability of Raphinha (£6.7m) and Junior Firpo (£4.8m) for the must-win game against Norwich. Bielsa said that Raphinha is “likely to be available” after being on the receiving end of a poor challenge from Romain Saiss last week.
Dean Smith is coming under mounting pressure following Aston Villa’s poor run of form, but he has received a timely boost with Emi Martinez (£5.5m) cleared to play against West Ham. “He’s had some personal issues that he had to fly back home [to Argentina] for, but he’s back today so I have no worries about his availability,” he said. Summer signing Leon Bailey (£6.4m) has trained this week and may make his first start.
Ben White (£4.4m) was substituted during Arsenal’s Carabao Cup win over Leeds, raising fears he could miss Saturday’s game against Leicester. Mikel Arteta confirmed on Friday that he is still suffering from a sickness bug that has been working its way through the squad and has been unable to train. Arteta revealed that “several players” have also been absent from training but did not go into any further detail. On Kieran Tierney (£4.9m), Arteta added that he is “progressing well” but did not offer any guarantees that he would start.
Sean Dyche admits he is wary of “breaking” in-form Maxwel Cornet (£6.0m) by exposing him to too much football too soon. The Ivorian has scored three goals in four games for Burnley, but Dyche said he and his coaches have to find the “line between pushing him and maximising his playing time, to get fitter and sharper, without breaking him”.
David Raya (£4.6m) is set to be out of action for four to five months after sustaining knee ligament damage in a collision with Ayoze Perez last weekend. In better news for Brentford, Thomas Frank said that there is a “good chance” that Bryan Mbeumo (£5.6m) and Ethan Pinnock (£4.7m) will be available to face Burnley, although the pair will be assessed on Friday.
Armando Broja (£5.0m) has scored in back-to-back matches for Southampton but will miss their meeting with Watford through injury. “Broja is not available for the weekend because he had an ankle injury after the Burnley game when he scored the goal,” Ralph Hasenhuttl confirmed. James Ward-Prowse (£6.3m) is available after serving his three-match suspension.
Danny Rose (£4.3m) has been declared fit to face Southampton after missing Watford’s 5-2 win against Everton with a knock. Popular FPL budget forward Emmanuel Dennis (£5.2m) is suspended for one game after earning five yellow cards.
Graham Potter has confirmed that Brighton’s Dan Burn (£4.4m) is out of his side’s game against Liverpool after suffering a knee injury.
