It was a tale of two gameweeks for Fantasy Premier League managers last weekend, depending on whether you captained Mo Salah or didn’t.
Those who stuck the armband on Salah were able to bask in the glory of his hat-trick of goals, an assist and all three bonus points, during Liverpool’s 5-0 mauling of Manchester United at Old Trafford. Those who opted against nominating the Egyptian as skipper, meanwhile, were left to lick their wounds. That is, of course, unless you picked Mason Mount instead, in which case please do send Friday’s EuroMillions numbers over to us at i at your earliest convenience.
Salah was nominated as our newsletter exclusive captain and it was predominantly due to his exploits that our chosen XI racked up a mammoth score of 95 points in total, 31 above the weekly average. While captaining Salah was an obvious move, we are allowed to feel more smug at the selections of Reece James and Tino Livramento in defence, who were both on the scoresheet.
Onto Gameweek 10 and there are a few fixtures that catch the eye, including the first game on Saturday between Leicester and Arsenal and the last of the day at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, where one under pressure manager will welcome another as Spurs host Manchester United.

Elsewhere, Premier League table-toppers Chelsea will be hoping to build upon their 7-0 thrashing of beleaguered Norwich City when they take on another winless side in Newcastle United, while Manchester City are in action against a Crystal Palace team earning plenty of plaudits but not necessarily points, under one-time sky blue midfielder Patrick Vieira.
This is our Gameweek 10 team in full, which comes in at £82.3m, £0.7m below the weekly budget of £83m.
Ederson (Man City)
Manchester City are yet to concede a single goal in four Premier League games at the Etihad this season and will be hoping for a further shutout when Crystal Palace visit on Saturday. Ederson has averaged 4.63 FPL points per game, a total only bettered by four other ‘keepers in the division.
Price: £6.0m Points: 37 Gameweek 10 fixture: Crystal Palace (h)
Ben Chilwell (Chelsea)
You’re always playing Thomas Tuchel’s selection roulette when selecting any Chelsea defenders in your FPL team, but Ben Chilwell seems a logical pick given how badly Newcastle coped with crosses into their box against Crystal Palace. Christian Benteke scored one header, had another disallowed and hit the woodwork with two more efforts at the weekend. Chilwell has attempted 20 crosses since Gameweek 7, which is the third-most among defenders in that period.
Price: £5.8m Points: 35 Gameweek 10 fixture: Newcastle (a)
Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool)
Trent Alexander-Arnold registered his third league assist of the season at Old Trafford to give a grateful Diogo Jota a tap-in. Despite missing two of Liverpool‘s first nine league games due to injury and illness, Alexander-Arnold is the second most creative player in FPL behind only Bruno Fernandes. And although he is yet to score this term, the 23-year-old is joint-second for shots (14) of all defenders.
Price: £7.6m Points: 51 Gameweek 10 fixture: Brighton (h)
Joao Cancelo (Man City)
Joao Cancelo has started every single one of Manchester City’s league fixtures this season and his ability to play on either side of the defence has come in extremely handy for Pep Guardiola. Remarkably, given City’s array of attacking talent, Cancelo has had more efforts on goal (17) than any other player in the squad, while his xG is second-top among all defenders in the division. Although the Portuguese still awaits his first goal of the campaign, it surely can’t be far away.
Price: £6.3m Points: 51 Gameweek 10 fixture: Crystal Palace (h)
Mo Salah (Liverpool)
Salah’s haul against United not only meant that he became the first player to surpass the 100-point mark in FPL this season but also ensured he has over double the number of points of any other midfielder in the game. Extraordinary. It is not too reactive to argue that Graham Potter’s Brighton are a far better-coached outfit than Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s United are, but they did concede four times against Manchester City in Gameweek 9. And with Salah in such irresistible form, the Seagulls face an almighty task to keep him quiet.
Price: £12.8m Points: 107 Gameweek 10 fixture: Brighton (h)
Mason Mount (Chelsea)
Mason Mount more than doubled his season’s FPL points tally on Saturday as Chelsea hammered Norwich at Stamford Bridge, by netting a hat-trick and grabbing an assist. Selecting him may seem like chasing last week’s points, but with his confidence brimming, Mount can maintain his hot streak against the division’s second-worst defence. Crystal Palace registered an xG total of 2.26 against Newcastle in Gameweek 9 and it was only through their profligacy and misfortune that Graeme Jones’ side escaped Selhurst Park with a 1-1 draw.
Price: £7.5m Points: 41 Gameweek 10 fixture: Newcastle (a)
Maxwel Cornet (Burnley)
Burnley are in desperate need of a victory and will need Maxwel Cornet to maintain his efficiency in front of goal if they are to beat Brentford this weekend. The Ivorian has scored three goals from only seven attempts, including twice in the 2-2 draw with Southampton in Gameweek 9. And despite playing in under half of Burnley’s opening nine league games, Cornet has the second-highest xG in their squad, only behind main striker Chris Wood.
Price: £6.0m Points: 22 Gameweek 10 fixture: Brentford (h)
Phil Foden (Man City)
With the possible exception of Ederson, no player in Manchester City’s squad is immune to rotation, but Phil Foden is doing more than most to hang onto his starting place. Since returning from injury, Foden has been City’s standout performer, scoring three goals and registering two assists across his four starts since Gameweek 6. Only Mo Salah has had more shots on target (10-8) and a better xG (3.71 to 2.06) than Foden out of all midfielders during that period.
Price: £8.1m Points: 35 Gameweek 10 fixture: Crystal Palace (h)
Son Heung-min (Spurs)
Manchester United’s horror-show against Liverpool overshadowed Tottenham‘s insipid second half display in defeat to West Ham which preceded it. It will be fascinating to see how Saturday’s meeting between two out-of-form sides pans out. Whether United will allow themselves to be quite so open remains to be seen, but Son Heung-min will be hopeful of exploiting any pockets of space in their backline. Over the past four gameweeks, he betters Harry Kane for xG (1.93-1.44), big chances (4-3) and chances created (12-3) in Spurs’ attack.
Price: £10.2m Points: 53 Gameweek 10 fixture: Man Utd (h)
Rodrigo (Leeds)
With a whole host of big-name strikers are injured or not justifying their price tags, now seems like a good time to take one or two risks in that area of the pitch. Leeds have so far been unable to build upon their blistering 2020-21 form as yet, but a win and last-gasp draw over the last two gameweeks should give them confidence against bottom of the league Norwich. With Patrick Bamford injured, Rodrigo Moreno will lead the line and will be on penalty-taking duty once more against a side that has let in 23 goals already.
Price: £6.3m Points: 18 Gameweek 10 fixture: Norwich (a)
Hwang Hee-chan (Wolves)
If their epic collapse against Watford is anything to go by, Everton’s crippling injury list that has ripped through the spine of their side is fast becoming a problem. The Hornets scored four goals from the 78th minute onwards to secure a scarcely believable 5-2 victory at Goodison Park. Wolves will take encouragement from that result and in Hwang Hee-chan have a striker in good goalscoring form. Only Jamie Vardy can better Hwang’s total of three goals over the past four gameweeks.
Price: £5.7m Points: 34 Gameweek 10 fixture: Everton (h)
