Everton were dealt a fresh blow in their battle to avoid Premier League relegation after winger Andros Townsend was carried off in tears in their FA Cup quarter-final at Crystal Palace on Sunday afternoon.
Townsend was applauded off by the crowd at Selhurst Park, formerly his home ground, after landing awkwardly following a challenge by the corner flag in the 11th minute.
He had started the game well but was left in agony after injuring his knee, with the match stopped for six minutes while he received treatment.
A stretcher team had come onto the pitch but Townsend was instead supported by two of Everton’s medical staff as he hobbled around the edge of the pitch towards the changing rooms.
Karen Carney, the former Chelsea midfielder, said on BBC Radio 5 Live: “Straight away I thought that was a bad one because there was no one around him and the way he landed.
“A player knows how they go down and how he went down I thought ouch. They’re not good ones.”
The injury comes with Frank Lampard’s side just three points above the relegation zone, though with two games in hand on Watford in 18th place.
