Erling Haaland’s representatives are carrying out extensive due diligence on the Borussia Dortmund striker’s next move with Manchester City holding the edge on European rivals for his signature.
City have prepared the framework of a contract which will make Haaland one of the top earners in the Premier League and have provided a clear career plan for the striker in a bid to clinch one of the summer’s big transfers.
But Haaland is yet to make a firm decision on his future, with Real Madrid, Barcelona, Paris Saint Germain and Manchester United other clubs interested in one of two big moves that will shape the next transfer window. Kylian Mbappe, who is a free agent and wanted by Real, is the other.
All roads point to the Etihad but sources in Germany have indicated that the player’s desire is to enhance his career rather than take the best financial offer on the table.
Haaland’s camp have questioned how the player will fit into plans for each club that is interested in him and have commissioned data analysis covering which club might best fit his profile. He is just 21 years of age and believes the next move will be critical to determine whether he fulfils his ambition of becoming the world’s best player.
It’s worth noting he did not opt for the most lucrative offer on the table when he moved to Borussia Dortmund, instead favouring career progression and a contract which included a buy-out clause that allows him to leave for £62.5million.
Jan Fjortoft, an ex-footballer and broadcaster, is close to the Haaland camp and confirmed on social media a “thorough process” was being followed.
“Team Haaland [is] working very hard to decide on next step. As they have shown before they are very professional and systematic I these processes,” he wrote.
Manchester City will hope to clinch a deal before the end of the season as they look to avoid a repeat of last summer’s unsuccessful pursuit of Tottenham striker Harry Kane.
Newcastle ‘target three positions’ in summer window
Newcastle United are targeting a new striker, a midfielder and a centre-back in a summer transfer window in which they will prioritise adding quality over numbers.
The club will have considerable spending power in the summer window although Hollywood signings – such as a mooted move for Neymar – will not be considered by a transfer committee that wants to bring in players who can grow with the club.
As previously revealed by i, the club have been heavily monitoring Darwin Nunez, the Benfica striker who is sure to be among the most coveted players in the summer transfer window.
Sven Botman, the Lille centre-back, is another target from the winter window they may revisit after the player revealed a desire to join Newcastle. The Magpies have also remained in contact with Jesse Lingard’s camp and interest may be revived – although he will have a plethora of options as a free agent.
Meanwhile, Fabian Schar is keen to re-sign for the club and a round of negotiations have progressed well with the defender’s representatives. Schar has interest from Serie A and the Bundesliga but Eddie Howe wants him to stay at Newcastle.
Financial terms are not anticipated to be an issue but Schar wants longer than the one-year deal offered last year and some reassurances about his role in the first team with the club looking to make further defender signings.
Leeds owners are ‘here to stay’
Leeds director Massimo Marinelli has reaffirmed Aser’s long-term commitment to the club, saying the ownership group are “here to stay”.
It was reported in December that 49ers Enterprises – the investment arm of NFL franchise San Francisco 49ers – had an option to buy the club outright by 2024 for £400million.
Marinelli said: “The 49ers are a strong partner of ours. They have been investing and increasing their stake over a certain period of time. Acer is 100% committed to Leeds United. We’re here to stay. There was some press speculation over what may or may not happen but at the moment the focus is on what it is the club needs.”
Marinelli was speaking at the Financial Times Business of Football summit last month as he admitted the short-term goal of the club was now Premier League survival.
But he did say there have been consultations with the 49ers over possible stadium expansion: “With 49ers the relationship is open. It’s also about what they bring to the club in terms of additional commercial knowledge, stadium knowledge.
“They have a strong team behind them. We have daily conversations with them on what we need to do.”
