Newcastle transfer news: £60million Darwin Nunez plan accelerated after strong Premier League showing

Newcastle United moving out of the Premier League relegation fight has allowed the club to start making plans for a potentially transformative summer.

The Magpies’ excellent form has made top-flight football next year a virtual formality, an unexpected and welcome bonus which means the club have some certainty and are now ahead of schedule for their summer recruitment.

Agents are understood to have contacted the club already offering players for the summer transfer window, when a repeat of the £90m January spend is realistic.

As revealed in i in January, Benfica’s Darwin Nunez is a prime target for the Magpies. They were quoted around £50million for the player in January but it may now take closer to £60million to lure the Manchester United target from the Stadium of Light.

Newcastle also have an agreement with Aston Villa over Matty Targett, who has impressed on loan, and hope to return for Lille’s Sven Botman. High-profile free agents are also being scrutinised.

The blueprint will remain high calibre players capable of growing with the club with a premium placed on character.

The club are also set to overhaul their squad with as many as seven players up for sale, including Dwight Gayle, Ciaran Clark and former captain Isaac Hayden.

Newcastle will have a new chief executive officer in place by then to help ease the pressure on their transfer committee. The club also hope to finally appoint Dan Ashworth as director of football before the summer but the ex-Football Association and Brighton executive won’t concentrate solely on recruitment, with Steve Nickson retained as head of recruitment.
