David de Gea is back in contention to face Tottenham on Saturday evening after reportedly recording a false positive Covid test.
The Manchester United goalkeeper had initially been ruled out of their Premier League clash, only for his result to be deemed incorrect according to the Manchester Evening News.
There had already a slim possibility that Ralf Rangnick would rest his first-choice stopper ahead of the Champions League last-16 second leg against Atletico Madrid on Tuesday, handing Dean Henderson his first league appearance of the season on his 25th birthday.
Amid suggestions of other positive tests, United’s preparations faced disruption and not all the players checked in to the Lowry before the game.
Rangnick was hoping for a cleaner bill of health after four players – Luke Shaw, Raphael Varane, Cristiano Ronaldo and Edinson Cavani – missed the 4-1 defeat to Manchester City in last week’s derby.
Shaw is still testing positive for Covid and will not feature against Tottenham, though Ronaldo and Cavani are expected back.
It is the second week in a row that United’s pre-match routine has been rocked by confusion, Ronaldo’s hip injury last week leading to claims that he had not turned up to the hotel, infuriating team-mates.
Meanwhile, Scott McTominay is a major doubt with a calf problem and it appears unlikely Rangnick will risk him ahead of the midweek game against Atletico.
Tottenham will be missing Ryan Sessegnon, who Antonio Conte believes will not be back before the March international break, as well as Japhet Tanganga and Oliver Skipp.
