An astonishing five-minute spell of penalty controversy changed the course of Newcastle United‘s edgy contest with Fulham and may prove critical in the race for the Champions League.
Newcastle appeared to have initially survived when referee Rob Jones waved away Fulham appeals after Dan Burn tussled with Andreas Periera and then Kieran Trippier brought down Bobby Decordova-Reid in the second half.
VAR then pulled back the Trippier incident and awarded a spot kick in the 69th minute, sparking a chaotic sequence of events.
Aleksander Mitrovic dispatched the penalty but had slipped in his run up and mishit the ball against his standing foot before it rolled past Nick Pope. Amid chaotic scenes an indirect free-kick was awarded to Newcastle, much to the astonishment and glee of the home crowd.
“We got a lift from that moment, bizarrely that can happen. The players played with a bit more freedom afterwards,” Eddie Howe admitted after a game that was settled by substitute Alexander Isak’s 89th-minute winner.
Opposite number Silva said he had no issue with disallowing the Mitrovic penalty but felt both referee Jones and Mike Dean, who was operating VAR, were culpable for missing the Burn foul.
“I have to mention the moment of the penalty. Not because we missed, it can happen,” the Fulham manager said.
“I have to mention the decision of the referee and VAR. It’s difficult for us to understand – two clear decisions in the box and it’s difficult to believe the referee can’t see one.

“The decisions this afternoon were almost always against us. It’s clear this afternoon the referee didn’t have his best day. It’s difficult to understand how the referee and then the VAR missed it.
“It should be a penalty and red card for the player. The player pulled Andreas, it’s a clear penalty and red card. It’s a clear mistake from the referee first and the VAR second.
“[If Burn] is sent off we can win, we can lose. But the game will be completely different from that point, it’s clear for all of us.”
