Sean Dyche is expected to be named the new Everton manager on Friday barring any late hitches.
Dyche emerged as the clear alternative to Farhad Moshiri’s number one choice Marcelo Bielsa after talks on Thursday. He is probably the more practical choice, given the dire nature of Everton’s predicament.
Having flown into London for talks Bielsa is understood to have been impressed by Everton’s desire to appoint him but negotiations proved complicated and ultimately fruitless.
Bielsa wanted to overhaul the club’s playing style and coaching staff and outlined how he would do that over days of talks.
It says much about him that one of his biggest reservations was that he would not be able to do the club and players justice by taking over in mid-season without a full pre-season to implement his tactical and fitness requirements.
Whether Bielsa would have delivered a different answer if Everton had made the switch before the World Cup – when he would have had six weeks with most of the players – is another matter, but Everton were determined to give Frank Lampard time.
Dyche may not fire the imagination of some Everton fans but looks like a very solid appointment given his track record at Burnley and familiarity with the Premier League survival fight.
He is understood to be refreshed after leaving Turf Moor last year and enthused about the Everton role. He will fit in well with the director of football model that Everton have been building over the last few months.
Some reports claimed he would be appointed until the end of the season with a remit to keep the club in the Championship but he wants – and is expected to get – a longer term deal.
As i reported on Tuesday, Everton were speaking to a number of candidates as they pursued Bielsa and the club will hope it brings an end to a tumultuous week on Merseyside.
The club need to get moving in the transfer window after missing out of Arnaut Danjuma, who joined Spurs after agreeing to move to Everton.
One of Dyche’s first jobs will be to address the festering Anthony Gordon situation. The forward – the subject of firm interest from Newcastle – has missed two days of training this week as he seeks a move away.
