Newcastle transfer news: Karl Darlow joins Hull City on loan with a permanent deal being considered

Newcastle goalkeeper Karl Darlow has signed for Hull City on a six-month loan – and his new club are open to turning it into a long-term move.

Darlow has agreed to the move but was on the bench at Southampton last night as the two clubs agreed to him playing a part in the last stage of the League Cup “journey”.

For Hull it represents the final piece of their goalkeeper jigsaw, with Darlow set to compete with Matt Ingram for the number one jersey. For Newcastle it is further squad movement as they look to add options before the end of the transfer window on Tuesday.

“Karl Darlow is coming from Newcastle, we have completed his paperwork,” Hull chairman Tan Kesler confirmed to i.

“In terms of when we will announce it’s a tricky one, I want fans to be patient with us. The club – Newcastle – and the player wanted to participate in their cup journey and we have respected that. Hopefully once it’s done he will be joining us but the paperwork already has the signature on it.

“There’s no problems with the deal.”

Darlow agreed to join Hull despite other offers in the Championship.

“We have very good goalkeepers already. Matty is brilliant, he is leading the league in saves if not the top three,” Kesler explained.

“But we have an unfortunate moment last season where we had both senior goalkeepers injured. We don’t want the same situation.

“We want Karl because he’s experienced promotion and played at the highest level. He’s got different skills and attributes to Matty. I want our fans to know we’ll have two good goalkeepers we’ll feel secure about.

“Karl had other clubs but thanks to him, he believed in [manager] Liam (Rosenoir’s) style of play, the owner’s vision and he has agreed to join us. He has joined us for six months, you never know it could be long-term but in the end we have three young goalkeepers we’re trying to develop, Harvey Cartwright is an England under-20, Thimothee Orcel-Lo Tutala, who is a France under-20 international.

“For the short-term we needed more experience and more presence.”

Hull pulled off a coup by signing highly-rated midfielder Malcolm Ebiowei from Crystal Palace on loan and has also added Aaron Connolly, the Brighton forward who was on loan at Venezia earlier this season.

They remain in the hunt for further additions and have not given up on promotion.

“We can improve in one or two more positions. We will go to the domestic market but if we can’t, we will keep the same ship and try to sail it up,” Kesler said.
