Manchester United ramped up the pressure on Frank Lampard with a 3-1 victory over Everton to reach the fourth round of the FA Cup, despite a spirited display from the Toffees that earned the visitors an ovation at full-time from the travelling fans.
There were very few realistic opportunities for giant-killings over the course of the weekend, Tottenham edging past League One Portsmouth with a strike that moved Harry Kane to within one goal of Jimmy Greaves’ all-time club record.
Nottingham Forest fell victim to one of the biggest upsets as they paid the price for changing their entire starting XI and were beaten 4-1 by Blackpool, who sit 22nd in the Championship.
Vincent Kompany’s thriving Burnley also overcame Premier League opposition with a 2-1 win over Bournemouth but there were no such problems for Fulham and Brighton, who eased past Hull and Middlesbrough respectively.
Nathan Jones could not afford another defeat to dampen his disastrous start to life at Southampton but the Saints overcame a 1-0 deficit to beat Crystal Palace 2-1.
Leicester also risked being left red-faced against Gillingham, the Football League’s basement club, until Jamie Vardy set up Kelechi Iheanacho for the winner.
