Brentford 2-0 Bournemouth player ratings and analysis: Ivan Toney and Mathias Jensen fire Bees above Liverpool

Brentford 2-0 Bournemouth (Toney pen 39′, Jensen 75′)

Brentford coolly dispatched Gary O’Neil’s beleaguered Bournemouth to go eighth in the Premier League, overtaking Liverpool after their 3-0 loss to Brighton earlier today.

Buoyed by Ivan Toney’s return from injury, Thomas Frank’s side simply went through the motions at the Gtech Community Stadium, with Toney’s penalty and Mathias Jensen’s well-taken strike the notable moments of a quiet evening clash.

Toney cleverly tussled with Marco Senesi to win his penalty near the end of the first half before hammering it past fellow returner Neto in the Cherries net.

Josh Dasilva, Brentford’s best performer on the night, then found Jensen after some good work down the left, who curled home in far too much space.

Brentford’s exceptional home record continues, having only lost once in the league there all season, while Toney’s was the sixth penalty Bournemouth have conceded in their last eight league games.

O’Neil’s Cherries have not picked up a point or scored a league goal since the World Cup and are perched just one point above the relegation zone in 17th.

More from Football

Brentford

  • David Raya – Made good saves from Philip Billing and Siriki Dembele when called upon but a quiet afternoon for the Spanish stopper. 6
  • Kristoffer Ajer – Handled Jaidon Anthony well in an unfamiliar role. Did not offer much going forward. 6
  • Ethan Pinnock – A competent and assured showing as always from Pinnock, but without any memorable moments. 6
  • Ben Mee – Made some important challenges and provided a constant calming presence at the back. 7
  • Vitaly Janelt – A solid showing from the German out-of-position at left back. Had little to do with Ryan Christie often drifting inside. 6
  • Mathias Jensen – Took his goal with panache after a busy midfield performance. His long throws created problems for Bournemouth early on. 7
  • Christian Norgaard – Outshone by the other two midfielders but a confident performance from the Dane. 6
  • Jay Dasilva – Dasilva was everywhere for the Bees and set up Jensen’s goal well. While he was wasteful with a few shots from distance, his running and pressing was both a defensive and creative asset. 8
  • Bryan Mbeumo – A quiet evening for the Frenchman after his star showing against Liverpool. Had a good effort from distance saved but mostly nullified by Lloyd Kelly. 5
  • Ivan Toney – Won his penalty intelligently and finished it emphatically. Relatively restricted by Bournemouth’s defenders but a solid return from injury. 7
  • Yoane Wissa – A forgettable showing against a well-organised Bournemouth defence. Didn’t have a shot all game. 5

Bournemouth

  • Neto – Not challenged much with the saves he had to make and little he could do for Toney’s penalty in his first game since October. 6
  • Jack Stacey – Dealt well with Wissa and made some threatening runs forward, but his poor pass led to Brentford’s second. 5
  • Chris Mepham – Battled hard for the Cherries but could not stop Toney and co on his own. 7
  • Marco Senesi – Clumsily gave away a penalty that will never be overturned while VAR is around. Continues to struggle to adapt to Premier League football. 5
  • Lloyd Kelly – Kept Bryan Mbeumo completely out of the game and combined well with Anthony down the left. 7
  • Ryan Christie – Drifted in and out of the match and in and out from his wing. Spent a lot of time trying to find space in the middle, mostly without success. 6
  • Lewis Cook – Put his body on the line for 30 minutes before being forced off injured. A solid midfield showing cut short. 6
  • Jefferson Lerma – A busy performance but spent most of his time chasing Dasilva round the pitch. 6
  • Jaidon Anthony – Bournemouth’s liveliest player and biggest creative threat. Could not find a breakthrough but played his part well. 7
  • Philip Billing – Set up to act as a link between Bournemouth’s midfield and attack but ended up trying to do it all himself. Had a shot from distance saved well at the end of the first half. 7
  • Kieffer Moore – Had just one touch in the box in the first hour, a wayward header. Looked isolated up front. 4
