While VAR broke Manchester City hearts against Tottenham in midweek, the lack of it sealed a crucial three points on Saturday to see them leapfrog Liverpool once again at the top of the Premier League table.
With the score at 1-0, Toby Alderweireld fired a cross-field pass forward towards Dele Alli who controlled it on his chest and prepared to shoot.
However, as the ball fell towards to floor, it struck Kyle Walker’s arm and deflected out for a corner. While Alli appealed furiously for a penalty but referee Michael Oliver and his linesman were unmoved
The score remained the same until the final whistle, with Phil Foden’s early goal proving the difference.
Reaction: ‘Definitely a penalty’
There was agreement among those watching on with commentators and pundits unanimous that Spurs were robbed of a penalty.
“That is definitely a penalty for me that,” said Gary Neville on Sky Sports, with co-commentator Jamie Redknapp adding: “With VAR I think that is 100 per cent a penalty.”
Over on BBC Radio 5 Live, Dion Dublin concurred: “Dele Alli stopped in his tracks. And he’s right – that was a penalty.”
