Man City make formal complaint after Liverpool fan allegedly spat at member of Pep Guardiola’s staff

Manchester City have reported a Liverpool supporter to the Premier League after a member of their backroom team was allegedly spat at by a home fan during Sunday’s 2-2 draw at Anfield.

Pep Guardiola‘s side came from behind twice to secure a well-earned point against their Premier League title rivals with goals from Phil Foden and Kevin De Bruyne cancelling out strikes from Sadio Mane and Mo Salah.

Although Guardiola praised his players for their efforts during a taxing week in which they have played against Chelsea, PSG and Liverpool, he was unhappy with referee Paul Tierney for failing to send off James Milner in the second half.

And the City boss also revealed that a member of his backroom staff had informed him that they were spat at by a Liverpool fan during the game, before urging supporters to control their emotions better.

He said: “I didn’t see it. I heard about it, the people told me and if this happened I’m pretty sure Liverpool is going to take a measure about this person.

“Liverpool is greater than this behaviour, at every club there are people that make bad actions because of emotion – you have to control yourself.

“Nothing will change my admiration for this club. It was the same story two, three years ago when we came here and they destroyed our bus – it is certain people, not just Liverpool FC.

“It’s always a pleasure to come to this stadium. It’s an honour for this atmosphere, how they support the team. That’s why it’s Anfield.”

Another City staff member is said to have captured the moment on their phone and i understands that Premier League match staff were informed of the incident at the time.

It has been reported that Liverpool have opened an investigation into what took place following City’s complaint.

i has contacted the FA and both clubs for comment.
