Crystal Palace vs Everton: Player ratings and analysis as Gallagher steals the show at Selhurst Park

Crystal Palace 3-1 Everton (Gallagher 41′, 90+3′, Tomkins, 62′ | Rondon 70′)

If they began the afternoon next to each other in the Premier League table, Crystal Palace’s victory over Everton at Selhurst told the tale of two clubs on opposing trajectories.

Two goals from Conor Gallagher, including a stunning injury-time curler, further energised the love-in with new manager Patrick Vieira in this corner of south London, while the relationship between Rafael Benitez and the Everton could surely not be any more rancorous.

Even a spirited fightback after they were 2-0 down could not disguise the turmoil that refuses to allow the Goodison club out of its grip.

By contrast, Palace are a club that is united on and off the pitch. Vieira’s decision to give August signing Will Hughes a first start for the club was another example of the Frenchman’s knack for making the right move.

Hughes was magnificent in his 73 minutes on the pitch, exerting an unflappable control of the midfield which begin with a slipped pass in the opening minutes which led to Andre Ayew driving his shot against the legs of Jordan Pickford.

The home side took the lead five minutes before half-time. Ayew saw his first cross intercepted but was presented with the opportunity of a second when Demarai Gray played a casual back-pass. This time he picked out Gallagher who swept home.

Benitez then invited the fury of the Everton fans by bringing off Richarlison and replacing him with Salomon Rondon just before the hour.

The bile that flooded his way had not receded by the time James Tomkins found himself free at the far post in the 62nd minute to stab home a Hughes corner.

Rondon did his best to justify his manager’s substitution when he turned the ball over the line after Abdoulaye Doucoure had scuffed his shot.

However, the final word went to Gallagher who sent the home supporters into raptures when he latched onto a loose ball, cut inside and sent a wicked curler past the outstretched hands of the despairing Pickford and into the top corner.
