Premier League: Steven Gerrard to miss two Aston Villa games after testing positive for Covid-19

Steven Gerrard has tested positive for Covid-19 and will miss two Aston Villa games while self-isolating.

This includes the Boxing Day home game against Chelsea and Tuesday’s away game against Leeds.

Aston Villa confirmed their head coach had tested positive in a statement on Christmas Day, one week on from a match postponement caused by an outbreak of the virus at Villa Park.

Covid-19 has been causing havoc in English football recently but the Premier League has said it has no plans to suspend the season.

A statement said: “The Board this morning was able to make its decision in advance of Boxing Day to give clarity to clubs and their fans.

“We apologise for the inconvenience and disruption caused to those supporters’ festive plans.

“The League is aware that the decisions this week to postpone three matches on Boxing Day will disappoint supporters, and understands their frustrations at a special time of year when fans look forward to attending and watching football games.”
