Mo Salah made his Fantasy Premier League managers sweat last Saturday before eventually providing an assist for Divock Origi’s 94th-minute winner against Wolves.
The top-scoring player in the game was once more the most-captained player in Gameweek 15 and for a long time, it looked as though he would record just his second blank of the campaign, only to salvage a six-point return right at the death.
Salah will continue to be the most-captained player each week, so long as his ownership remains at over 70 per cent, but others are starting to emerge as potential rivals for the armband. Both Manchester clubs have attractive fixtures this weekend, raising the appeal of their top-performing FPL assets.
Given Brighton’s injury crisis, this could have been a good week to select a Spurs player as captain, however, it looks increasingly likely that Sunday’s game at the Amex will be postponed due to a Covid outbreak at the north London club this week.
Here are the five best captaincy options this weekend, including a differential owned by only 1.3 per cent of managers. Head to i‘s Fantasy Football Facebook group to see who other managers are planning to captain this weekend and if you haven’t already, sign up to our weekly newsletter for our exclusive captaincy pick.
Mo Salah (Liverpool)
You have to go all the way back to Gameweek 2 to find Mo Salah’s first – and so far only – blank of the season when he failed to provide an assist or goal in a routine 2-0 win over Burnley at Anfield. The Egyptian continued his remarkable run of returns last weekend, providing a dramatic late assist for Divock Origi to reward his FPL managers. Salah, who reached the 20 goal mark for the campaign against AC Milan, is closing in on Jamie Vardy’s record for scoring or assisting in 15 consecutive Premier League games.
Price: £13.1m Points: 152 Gameweek 16 fixture: Aston Villa (h)
Cristiano Ronaldo (Man Utd)
Even before Tottenham’s preparations for Sunday’s match with Brighton were hit by a Covid outbreak, plenty of FPL managers were making the straight swap from Harry Kane to Cristiano Ronaldo. While Kane has blanked in each of his last six matches, Ronaldo offered a timely reminder of the threat he poses by racking up a 13-point score against Arsenal last Thursday. Over the past four gameweeks, Ronaldo ranks joint-top among all players for shots (with 15) alongside Salah and Diogo Jota.
Price: £12.4m Points: 58 Gameweek 16 fixture: Norwich (a)
Bernardo Silva (Man City)
The time has come to start considering Bernardo Silva as a captaincy option. Dubbed the best player in the Premier League by his manager Pep Guardiola, Bernardo has been in incredible form lately, scoring five goals in his last five Premier League appearances. During that spell, only Trent Alexander-Arnold (with 47) has accumulated more FPL points than Bernardo (43) who will be well rested for Saturday’s match after being given the night off for City’s 2-1 defeat in Leipzig on Tuesday.
Price: £7.6m Points: 84 Gameweek 16 fixture: Wolves (h)
Jamie Vardy (Leicester)
At long, long last, Newcastle registered their first win – and clean sheet – of the season against Burnley last weekend. While that result should inspire confidence, one swallow doesn’t make a summer and Leicester will expect to make a breakthrough against a team that has conceded 30 goals already this season. Jamie Vardy, who started last weekend’s defeat to Aston Villa on the bench, has a good record against the Toon Army, scoring five goals and providing two assists in his last eight matches against them.
Price: £10.7m Points: 77 Gameweek 16 fixture: Newcastle (h)
Differential pick: Raheem Sterling (Man City)
It has been an age since Raheem Sterling was a viable FPL pick, given his prohibitive price tag and lack of minutes under Guardiola in recent seasons. However, the England international appears to be working his way back into form and consequently in favour over the last few weeks. Sterling has started in each of City’s last four league games, scoring twice and providing an assist over that run. With Phil Foden and Gabriel Jesus rated as doubts to face Wolves, he is expected to retain his starting place this weekend.
Price: £10.6m Points: 42 Gameweek 16 fixture: Wolves (h)
