Jurgen Klopp confronts referee Paul Tierney over non-penalty and red card in Liverpool’s draw at Tottenham

Jurgen Klopp has suggested referee Paul Tierney has a “problem” with him after Liverpool were denied a penalty in the 2-2 draw at Tottenham on Sunday.

Klopp was booked during a chaotic encounter in north London that saw the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) deployed to controversial results.

Harry Kane avoided a red card and even a VAR check for a lunge on Andrew Robertson, Tierney waved away penalty appeals after Diogo Jota was knocked down in the box, and Robertson saw his yellow card for a kick on Emerson Royal upgraded to red after a check from Stockley Park.

Klopp was evidently fuming after the game ended and strolled over to question the official – gesticulating to the penalty area where he felt Jota deserved a spot kick.

Asked afterwards if he felt his team had been badly done by, Klopp said: “Yes definitely. You can give Robbo a red card.

“[Kane’s] is not the smartest challenge but that is definitely a red card. No doubt about it. His leg was in the air, it was pure coincidence. Harry cannot judge it. If Robbo’s leg is on the ground it is a broken leg.

“We have a VAR sitting there and he thinks ‘have a look again at Robertson again’. Fine, that’s what he is there for. But what did he do in that situation? And then there is the penalty situation with Diogo Jota.

“Mr Tierney told me Diogo stops on purpose because he wants the foul. First and foremost if you want to shoot you have to stop because you cannot do both.

“It is always helpful when you play football yourself. When you see the situation back [Jota’s penalty appeal], the VAR is there. Why is he stopping? I don’t understand.

“The draw is fine. We are not crazy enough to think we cannot draw at Tottenham but these situations are crucial.”

Klopp was shown a yellow card after berating Tierney from the touchline. The pair exchanged words before Klopp walked away and pulled his scarf over his mouth.

And the Liverpool boss says he isn’t sure why he was carded.

“I have no idea what his [Paul Tierney’s] problem is with me,” he added.

“I was a bit more emotional in the game but he gives me a yellow card but it is not allowed in a situation like this? He comes over and gives me a yellow card but I’d have preferred the right decisions on the pitch.

“We have our complete midfield out, the best centre half in the world… We lose our captain on matchday so you cannot expect to play the best football game of the season. You have to fight and that’s what the boys did.

“But just an objective ref who sees the situations and judges them. He told me he thinks he stops on purpose. It is incredible. He had the best spot on the pitch and doesn’t give it. You will have to ask him what his problem is with me.”

The shared points means Liverpool lose ground on league leaders Manchester City, who beat Newcastle 4-0 earlier on Sunday.

That, coupled with Chelsea’s 0-0 draw with Watford, means City have a three-point lead on their title rivals heading into Christmas.

The EPL will meet on Monday to discuss whether or not to implement a circuit breaker to the current fixture list in order to stem the number of Covid-19 cases in the top flight.

Liverpool are scheduled to play Leicester in the EPL Cup on Wednesday before hosting Leeds on Boxing Day and then facing the Foxes again in the Leeds on 28 December.

And Klopp is unhappy with the number of games crammed into the schedule.

“We play now on Wednesday, Sunday and Tuesday,” Klopp said. “That is impossible. We do not have the players. We could maybe have another case or two. We have to think about it, we cannot just push it all through.

“First of all take away the second semi-final of the Carabao Cup. Just play once, wherever you play it I don’t care. The 26th and 28th of December is really not possible. We would prefer to play but we need some help. If we carry on we cannot carry on as usual.

“If we don’t play any more and have a break I am fine. But I know the problem. When do you want to play the games. It is not that easy to fit them in. We said before coronavirus that it was a bit busy and now it gives us a proper punch.”
