Newcastle transfer news: ‘No clubs are interested’ in Anthony Martial despite rumours, says Man Utd boss

Ralf Rangnick has confirmed that Anthony Martial wants to leave Manchester United but will not be sold unless a club makes an acceptable offer.

The new interim United manager, who takes his team to Newcastle on Monday, has met with Martial, whose agent declared that he wants to quit the club in the January transfer window.

“Yes we spoke yesterday at length, he explained to me he’s been here seven years and he feels it’s the right time for a change,” said Rangnick.

“In a way it’s understandable. But it’s also important to see the situation of the club – Covid, three competitions, wanting to be successful.

“I told him as long as there is no club showing interest, so far there is no offer from any other club, while this is the case he will stay.”

Martial has endured a wretched run of form for United, scoring just three goals in 28 appearances since last New Year’s Day – with two of those coming in the 9-0 win over Southampton in February.

Not surprisingly, despite his agent’s best efforts, there appears a limited market for the 26-year-old although Newcastle, Juventus, Sevilla and former club Monaco have been linked.

The major problem for interested parties lies not only in Martial’s salary – a reported £250,000 a week – but also United’s desire to try and generate cash.

Martial has activated bonus clauses in his six years at Old Trafford that mean United have paid Monaco over £50m for his services.

Meanwhile, Rangnick is delaying making a decision on Pogba, who is out of contract at the end of the season and could be sold next month to avoid allowing him to leave on a free.

Pogba remains injured and is the only senior United player out of contention for Monday night’s visit to St James’ Park.

“I’ve spoken to Paul on the day he came back from Dubai, we spoke on the phone,” said Rangnick.

“Right now it’s for him to get fit, match fit another couple of weeks and my focus is on players who are available and who can play in the games.”
