How to vote for Sports Personality of the Year 2021: BBC SPOTY voting explained, nominees and winner odds

Tom Daley, Tyson Fury, Adam Peaty, Emma Raducanu, Raheem Sterling or Dame Sarah Storey?

The BBC shortlisted six contenders for this year’s Sports Personality of the Year award, which has been running since 1954.

Lewis Hamilton, Ben Stokes and Andy Murray are among the recent winners, while the last female recipient was Zara Phillips in 2006.

Raducanu was four at the time of Phillips’ win, and 15 years on the teenage tennis sensation is the heavy favourite to lift the trophy following her US Open triumph.

She’s up against three Team GB and Paralympic GB stars in Daley, Peaty and Storey, while England footballer Sterling and heavyweight champion Fury are also looking to win the award for the first time.

When is SPOTY winner announced?

Sports Personality of the Year will be broadcast on Sunday 19 December on BBC One and BBC iPlayer, and the show runs from 6.45pm to 9pm GMT.

Traditionally the Sports Personality of the Year award is handed out last, while other awards on offer are Young Sports Personality of the Year, Team and Coach of the Year, World Sport Star of the Year, Lifetime Achievement and Unsung Hero.

How to vote for Sports Personality of the Year

Voting does not open until Sunday’s live show, but details are on the BBC Sport website with viewers able to vote over the phone or online.

The number to call will be broadcast when voting opens, while online votes are limited to one per registered BBC account. You can sign up for a BBC account here.

Gary Lineker, Clare Balding, Gabby Logan and Alex Scott are set to present the awards and will announce when the voting opens on Sunday evening.

Who is on the SPOTY shortlist?

Tom DaleyWon Olympic gold at Tokyo 2020 along with Matty Lee in the synchronised 10m platform event, and then claimed bronze in the men’s 10m platform to become the first British diver to win four Olympic medals.

Tyson Fury – An 11th-round win over Deontay Wilder saw unbeaten Fury retain his WBC crown in Las Vegas two months ago and end the heavyweight trilogy in style.

Adam Peaty – Dominated to win 100m breaststroke gold at Tokyo 2020, becoming the first British swimmer to defend his title at the Olympics before also winning 4 x 100m mixed medley relay gold and men’s 4 × 100m medley relay silver.

Emma RaducanuWon the US Open aged 18, becoming the first British women’s grand slam singles champion for 44 years and first qualifier to win any slam in the Open era.

Raheem SterlingEngland’s standout player at Euro 2020, scoring three times en route to the final, and then joined the Premier League 100 club in December.

Dame Sarah Storey – Now Great Britain’s most successful Paralympian of all time with 17 golds and 28 medals overall.
