Fantasy Premier League tips: The 11 best players to sign for your FPL team in Gameweek 28

Following a Fantasy Premier League gameweek in which Burnley were the only club to play two fixtures comes a far more interesting double with at least six teams in action twice over the course of five days.

Indeed, with none of Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Spurs or West Ham playing more than once, this could be a great time to make gains on your mini-league rivals by scouring the options at less fancied clubs in the division.

The six clubs that will definitely play twice in Gameweek 29 are: Aston Villa, Leeds, Newcastle, Southampton, Watford and Watford. That number could conceivably swell to eight if either Chelsea or Norwich win their fifth round ties against Luton Town or Liverpool respectively.

There is also another double in Gameweek 29 to consider when plotting your transfer moves with six clubs including Arsenal, Liverpool and Spurs, set to play twice. Newcastle United, meanwhile, are the only team to play four games over the next two gameweeks, so purchasing one or two of their players could be a savvy move.

Double Gameweek teams this week

  • Aston Villa: Southampton (h), Leeds (a)
  • Leeds: Leicester (a), Aston Villa (h)
  • Newcastle: Brighton (h), Southampton (a)
  • Southampton: Aston Villa (a), Newcastle (h)
  • Watford: Arsenal (h), Wolves (a)
  • Wolves: Crystal Palace (h), Watford (h)

*Both Chelsea and Norwich could join the double gameweek if either progresses in the FA Cup. These will be their fixtures if that happens:

  • Chelsea: Burnley (a), Norwich (a)
  • Norwich: Brentford (h), Chelsea (h)

Things will begin to slow down from Gameweek 30 onwards, however, as a number of sides will not have fixtures in the weekend commencing Friday 18 March due to participation in the FA Cup quarter-finals. That week looks an optimal time to use the Free Hit chip if you still have possession of one of them.

This week’s team costs £80.6m, well below the £83m budget.

Jose Sa (Wolves)

Wolves have arguably the best pair of fixtures of any double gameweek team with matches against Crystal Palace and Watford at Molineux. Only Liverpool (with seven) and Manchester City (eight) have conceded fewer goals at home this season than Wolves (10). Palace have failed to score in six of their 13 league matches on the road, while Watford have managed a solitary goal in their previous four away games. Jose Sa is the joint-highest scoring goalkeeper in the game and can go clear of Ederson this week.

Antonio Rudiger (Chelsea)

Although Chelsea are not yet part of the double gameweek pack, they will be if they beat Luton Town in the FA Cup or if Norwich City progress against Liverpool. Assuming Chelsea will be too strong for the Hatters, they will have two favourable fixtures in Gameweek 28 against Burnley and Norwich. Chelsea have the joint-best defensive record away from home in the division and Antonio Rudiger is a safe pick to play both games given he has started more league games (24) than any other Chelsea player.

Kyle Walker-Peters (Southampton)

Tino Livramento’s instant impact at Southampton limited Kyle Walker-Peter’s minutes in the opening weeks of the season, but he has been a key reason behind their five-game unbeaten run. Walker-Peters scored his first Premier League goal in the 1-1 draw against Manchester City in Gameweek 23 and has been part of a back four that has recorded consecutive clean sheets. Over the past five gameweeks, only Joao Cancelo has attempted more shots than Walker-Peters (14 to nine) while he has also created six chances.

Romain Saiss (Wolves)

With Nelson Semedo an injury doubt and Rayan Ait-Nouri and Marcal competing for the left wing-back slot, a centre-back is the way to go if you’re after a Wolves defender. There isn’t much to separate the three pillars of Bruno Lage’s defence, with Conor Coady leading Max Kilman and Romain Saiss by eight points. If money is no object, though, Saiss is probably the best option owing to his superior attacking threat. The Moroccan has had 15 shots and recorded an xG of 1.8, both of which are superior to Coady and Kilman’s totals.

Raphinha (Leeds)

Leeds will be hoping that Marcelo Bielsa’s successor Jesse Marsch can give the club a new manager bounce following a humbling February in which they took one point and conceded 20 goals in five games. A 4-0 loss to Spurs brought an end to the Bielsa era and while Leeds were distinctly second-best, it is a minor mystery that they failed to score. Raphinha, in particular, was heavily involved, creating six chances and having three shots on goal, including one from a free-kick that rattled Hugo Lloris’ upright.

Philippe Coutinho (Aston Villa)

Another gifted Brazilian playmaker with two matches coming up this week is Aston Villa’s Philippe Coutinho, who has already risen £0.4m in price since being added to FPL in January. Coutinho made an explosive start to his Villa career, providing two goals and two assists in his opening three league outings for the club, but has since gone on a run of three games without any of either. Nevertheless, since his debut in Gameweek 22, Coutinho ranks top among Villa’s squad for shots (14) and third for chances created (eight).

Mo Salah (Liverpool)

Mo Salah might only have one game but he could quite conceivably outscore most players with two given the form he has shown this campaign. Since returning from Afcon, Salah has looked incredibly sharp, attempting more efforts on goal (19) than any other player over the past four gameweeks, despite playing a game fewer than some of his rivals. A monster 28-point haul in Gameweek 26 took the Egyptian even further clear at the top of the FPL standings and he remains a must-have pick.

Joe Willock (Newcastle)

Related Stories

Joe Willock’s hot streak played a pivotal role in Newcastle avoiding relegation last season and he is showing signs of rediscovering his golden touch once more. Willock became the youngest player in Premier League history to score in seven consecutive matches at the end of the 2020-21 campaign and after going 19 games without a single goal this term, he has netted in back-to-back matches. In-form Newcastle are the only team to play four times over the next two gameweeks, raising Willock’s appeal further.

More from Football

Che Adams (Southampton)

Armando Broja has been the Southampton striker of choice in FPL recently, but he has been out-performed by his (more expensive) strike partner Che Adams of late. Adams has registered an attacking return in each of his last four games, scoring three times and providing one assist for the in-form Saints. Indeed, since Gameweek 24 only Harry Kane has amassed more FPL points (30) among forwards than Adams (27). Southampton’s promising run of fixtures gives Adams the chance to maintain his hot streak.

Price: £6.9m Points: 83 Gameweek 28 fixture(s): Aston Villa (a), Newcastle (h)

Harry Kane (Spurs)

Although Tottenham’s form has fluctuated, Harry Kane has been back to his very best, delivering man of the match displays in wins against Manchester City and Leeds over the past three gameweeks. During that time, Kane has provided three goals and an assist and the underlying statistics suggest he has been unfortunate to not have had more. Kane ranks top for shots (16), shots in the box (11) and shots on target (eight) and has created the second-most chances of any forward with six.

Price: £12.3m Points: 96 Gameweek 28 fixture: Everton (h)

Raul Jimenez (Wolves)

A fixtures over form pick. Raul Jimenez has only scored twice in his last 12 Premier League games and was surprisingly dropped to the bench for Sunday’s defeat against West Ham. Given how blunt the Wolves attack looked without him, though, Jimenez should regain his place in Gameweek 28 for matches that could define the club’s season. The Mexican leads the way for both shots (45) and chances created (28) in Wolves’ squad and is the obvious attacker to target.
