England have announced their provisional 28-player squad for Euro 2022 as preparations for the country’s second hosting of the competition ramp up.
Led by captain Leah Williamson, the squad will train together twice before three warm-up fixtures in June against Belgium, the Netherlands and Switzerland respectively.
Williamson is captaining the Lionesses at a major tournament for the first time – having only been appointed to the role in early April – and she will be assisted by Millie Bright and Ellen White, two players with vast experience for club and country.
When the 16-team Euros kick off in early July, England will be without 67-time international Jordan Nobbs due to a knee injury sustained earlier this month. And although named, Aston Villa’s Jill Scott – capped 156 times – could also miss out on the final squad due to ongoing fitness difficulties.
The returning Steph Houghton and Fran Kirby are also not fully fit. But having donned the Three Lions jersey 175 times between them, their selection is self-explanatory.
Manchester City striker Chloe Kelly has also returned from injury and forms part of a formidable array of attacking options alongside the likes of Arsenal’s Beth Mead, City’s Lauren Hemp and Manchester United’s Alessia Russo.
Head coach Sarina Wiegman said: “We have a settled squad and I know we have players in our team that will give everything to make it a summer to remember.

“It’s important the players have the chance to get some rest now after a very busy season before we get back to our work. We then have more than a month to prepare and it’s important we use this time to build an even closer connection on and off the pitch.”
The final 23-player selection is due to be confirmed in mid-June, with the Lionesses taking to the field at the tournament for the first time on 6 July against Austria at Old Trafford.
