Fantasy Premier League tips: The 11 best players to sign for your FPL team in Gameweek 38

The most unpredictable Fantasy Premier League season in recent memory will come to an end on Sunday when the 20 Premier League clubs take to the pitch for the final time in 2021-22.

This has been a campaign of Covid-enforced fixture postponements, blank gameweeks, double gameweeks, Mo Salah heroics, Son Heung-min goals, Kevin De Bruyne magic, stunning triple captain hauls, high-scoring defenders and low-scoring attackers and for the first time ever, two Free Hit chips.

It has been a year like no other and the managers who have chopped and changed and tinkered and tweaked their teams from the first weekend right through until the last, have earned a well-deserved break from it all before the “fun” starts up again in August.

Compared to most gameweeks recently, 38 has a relatively sedate look to it, given there are only 10 matches taking place. However, if recent history is anything to go by, FPL managers could be in store for a final day bonanza given goals tend to fly in all over the place on the season finale.

More from Football

A minimum of 30 goals have been scored in each of the previous six final days, with 37 in 2016-17 setting a Premier League record across a 20-team season. There tends to be at least one free-scoring fixture, either in the form of an impromptu basketball game or else an unforgiving thrashing.

West Brom 5-5 Manchester United, Spurs 5-4 Leicester and Crystal Palace 5-3 Bournemouth spring to mind for the former category, while Newcastle 5-1 Spurs, Chelsea 5-1 Sunderland, Hull 1-7 Spurs and most famous of all, Stoke 6-1 Liverpool can be filed in the latter.

There are a few match-ups that look as though they could fit the bill this time around. Chelsea could rack up a cricket score against Watford at Stamford Bridge, while Spurs and the Golden Boot-hunting Son Heung-min take on Norwich. Title contenders Manchester City and Liverpool are both at home and Leicester vs Southampton has the potential for the most fun, given their defences are leaky and neither has anything but pride to play for.

David Raya (Brentford)

Unfortunately for Leeds, who need a win on Sunday to retain their Premier League status, Brentford are enjoying a barnstorming end to their first campaign at this level. The Bees have won seven of their last 10 league games and been extremely miserly in front of their own fans, keeping five clean sheets in their last six at home. Christian Eriksen’s integration has been crucial to that upturn in form, but David Raya’s return to fitness in February should not be underestimated.

Ryan Sessegnon (Spurs)

A budget-friendly option with the potential for a big upside: there is plenty to like about Ryan Sessegnon this weekend. The 22-year-old, who already seems to have been around forever, is enjoying the best run of games in his Spurs career having started in their previous five Premier League matches. In that time, he has amassed 27 points at an average of 5.4 per game and he has been unfortunate to not register bigger returns considering he has created five “big chances”, three more than any other defender over that period.

Reece James (Chelsea)

Owning Reece James in FPL this season has been eventful if nothing else. Managers have either been treated to huge points hauls – 18 in matches with Arsenal and Burnley, 21 against Newcastle – or else infuriating one-pointers. Correctly predicting which James would show up is likely to have had some bearing on whether managers have had a successful season or not given he has been one of the more popular defensive assets throughout. With Watford the visitors this weekend, James could well add to his six double-digit returns.

Joao Cancelo (Man City)

Only three defenders have surpassed the 200-point mark in FPL history: Andy Robertson (213) in 2018-19, Trent Alexander-Arnold (210) in 2019-20 and Virgil van Dijk (208) in 2018-19. Joao Cancelo is bang on 200 going into the final day and considering he has earned scores of 14 and 18 this season, it is not beyond the realms of possibility that he could surpass Robertson’s record. Only Van Dijk (with 21) has more clean sheets among defenders than Cancelo who has also weighed in with 11 assists and one goal.

Andy Robertson (Liverpool)

A slow start is to blame for Andy Robertson’s overall tally lagging behind Trent Alexander-Arnold, but since his first big score of the season (12 points against Southampton in Gameweek 13), the Scot has been easily the best defensive asset in the game. Robertson’s total of 151 points since then is 23 more than any other defender has managed and remarkably he has only failed to provide a clean sheet or attacking points in two of his previous 20 matches. Owned by just over 11 per cent of the game, Robertson is a strong differential pick for managers looking for a late surge up the rankings.

Son Heung-min (Spurs)

Son Heung-min could not have picked a more obliging opponent to face on the final day than Norwich City as he chases down Mo Salah in the Golden Boot race. Son is just one goal short of Salah’s total of 22 and plays against a defence that has the worst record in the Premier League having shipped a colossal 79 goals so far. Depending on how the match at Carrow Road plays out, his mate Harry Kane may even relinquish penalty-taking duties for the afternoon to assist him in his efforts.

Price: £11.1m Points: 246 Gameweek 38 fixture: Norwich (a)

Mason Mount (Chelsea)

A flat-track bully of the highest order. Of Mason Mount’s 10 Premier League goals this season, all but one has been scored against a team outside of the current bottom six and of his five double-digit scores in FPL, four have come against Norwich (twice), Southampton, and this weekend’s opponents Watford. Chelsea’s campaign has fizzled out in disappointing fashion and Mount will be more determined than most to ensure that it ends on a high following his decisive penalty miss in Saturday’s FA Cup final defeat.

Price: £7.7m Points: 167 Gameweek 38 fixture: Watford (h)

Jarrod Bowen (West Ham)

Jarrod Bowen’s spectacular form this season is evidenced by his position as the fourth-highest scoring player in FPL, while he is also one of only five players to have surpassed the double century mark for points. Bowen’s return of 12 goals and 17 assists is remarkable for a player that started the season priced up at £6.5m and judging by his efforts against Manchester City last weekend, he is not done yet. Motivation will be high for West Ham as only a win against Brighton will do in their quest to overhaul Manchester United into the Europa League spots.

Price: £6.8m Points: 204 Gameweek 38 fixture: Brighton (a)

Phil Foden (Man City)

It goes without saying that if you can afford to get to Kevin De Bruyne (perhaps by selling Mo Salah) then he is the best Manchester City asset to bring in this week. However, if funds are tight – as they are in this team – you will have to look elsewhere for your attacking City coverage. Jack Grealish has posted some promising numbers of late and will have plenty of motivation to perform against his former club, but Phil Foden is perhaps the safer pick having sat out last weekend’s draw at West Ham. Foden has registered two goals and two assists across his last four appearances.

Price: £7.9m Points: 135 Gameweek 38 fixture: Aston Villa (h)

James Maddison (Leicester)

Fresh from their Conference League disappointment in Rome, Leicester City played with the handbrake off at Watford, with James Maddison, Harvey Barnes and Jamie Vardy all racking up big scores. It has been a disappointing campaign for the Foxes, but they can end it on a high against a Southampton side that has lost eight of its last 11 matches. Maddison, who was named the club’s Player of the Year this week, is their top-scoring FPL asset with 158 points – a total that includes six double-digit returns.

Price: £6.9m Points: 158 Gameweek 38 fixture: Southampton (h)

Harry Kane (Spurs)

Harry Kane has recovered from a slow start to become this season’s highest-scoring forward in FPL with a combined 16 goals and 10 assists. The England captain will need a goal at Carrow Road to avoid finishing with his lowest-ever Premier League tally and if history is anything to go by, the prospects of him doing so are favourable. Since 2016-17, Kane has scored in every final game he has played in, accumulating seven goals and an assist in total and averaging 12 points a game. If you’re chasing in a mini-league, captaining Kane over Son could be a good differential move.
